I started with prosciutto ri Parma and mozzarella...then a raviolo with egg and shaved truffles and finally the pork suckling. Everything was cooked as described...all with the classic balance that italian food is famous for.

The restaurant looks great from the street, but I was disappointed with both the food and the service. We were staying at the amazing hotel next door with our 6 year old daughter and a friend met us for an early dinner at 6pm. The server was inattentive and not friendly.

She did not seem well informed about the menu or the wine or maybe she couldn't be bother to answer questions. We ordered the special suckling pig (which was fine), a few pastas - including the squid ink pasta for the kiddo - and a lobster special for husband - some appetizers and a mid range Barolo. Luckily I am a salt fanatic because my lips were chapped from the excess salt by the time we were done.

Maybe I had unfairly high expectations because one of my best meals ever was at Gramercy Tavern and in NYC, amazing, friendly and professional food service is one of my favorite parts of eating out - but I would recommend one of the sit down restaurants at Eatly or Elios over Mailolina.

Too much to like. But here are the quick hits: Damn good food. Breakfast, wow. Thick cut bacon, best. The coffee from Ethiopia & Columbia was special.

Lunch at Maialino on a cloudy and drizzly November afternoon was a memorable experience. First of all, Gramercy Park is one of my favorite areas of NYC - a view of "old" New York. We were not seated right at the window, but the windows are so large that everyone can enjoy the beauty of the park. The decor is not formal but rustic and provides a casual and relaxing ambiance in what can at times be a bustling restaurant. The food is amazing - the Executive Chef, Nick Anderer, has a passion for Rome and roman cuisine. It shows in both the menu offerings and the preparation. The prix fixe lunch is very reasonably priced and a great deal for the quality of the food. Also there are no restrictions -- you can order any item. Add some wine from a very nice selection of wines that are served by the glass, quartino, or bottle. The quartino (about a glass and a half) is a great value! As far as the food goes, do try the fried artichoke appetizer. I have only had them once before and that was in Rome...close your eyes and you are right back there. But the "must have" items on the menu all contain pork. Afterall, the restaurant is named for a small pig or piglet. The pasta dishes containing pork, especially the Malfatti (the braised suckling pig and arugula) is absolutely the best pasta dish I have had in New York City, and we have been to many Italian restaurants here over the years. A selection of delicious cookies comes with the prix fixe lunch that you simply must add an espresso to if you want to fully enjoy them. It's the perfect ending to a delicious meal! What more could you want?

Great Happy hour and a must have bar snack is the fried artichoke hearts. It’s not a load or “trying to be trendy” restaurant bar so you can actually talk to your date or group. Great place to meet up after work.
