Waste of time. Although I'm sympathetic to the fact that the museum is in disrepair due to damage caused by hurricane Sandy, I think that the fact that 90% of the exhibits were closed should have been disclosed on the website. The ladies at the information desk said it's noted prominently but I beg to differ.

With the limited amount of exhibits open, it takes longer to get there and back then to walk through.

“Not as good as we expected”
Reviewed February 28, 2014

We were a bit disappointed with Ellis island as we have seen much better social history museums in our own country. Lifts weren't working supposedly due to Hurricane Sandy which happened in 2012 also no proper cafe for the same reason surely they had enough time to get such a popular tourist spot up and running . Fortunately in Feb there were no queues

“Sort of scary. . .”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

Boy, after a walk thru that museum, reading every word, it's surprising anyone wanted to emigrate to the US - the perils, prejudice, humiliation and struggle they had to endure ONCE THEY ARRIVED! I guess where they came from, at that time, had to be worse - at lease for those who came voluntarily.

It's worth a visit, even though you may leave a little sadder. The boat ride is nice, and to get a greater first hand knowledge of American Immigration of the past, which may help you how it is now.

You'll have a walking tour via the hand held recorders - which I HATED (I'm sure they're teaming with germs) - they had a lot of fluff 're-enactment' readings which I'm just don't care for.

“Every American should visit!”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

I can't believe it took me this long to visit Ellis Island! What a great museum they have here! The museum does a nice job describing the life of immigrants and their travels to America. It is clean, and the staff is very friendly. It really gives you a feel of what your relatives went through to get here!
