Boy, after a walk thru that museum, reading every word, it's surprising anyone wanted to emigrate to the US - the perils, prejudice, humiliation and struggle they had to endure ONCE THEY ARRIVED! I guess where they came from, at that time, had to be worse - at lease for those who came voluntarily.

It's worth a visit, even though you may leave a little sadder. The boat ride is nice, and to get a greater first hand knowledge of American Immigration of the past, which may help you how it is now.

You'll have a walking tour via the hand held recorders - which I HATED (I'm sure they're teaming with germs) - they had a lot of fluff 're-enactment' readings which I'm just don't care for.

I can't believe it took me this long to visit Ellis Island! What a great museum they have here! The museum does a nice job describing the life of immigrants and their travels to America. It is clean, and the staff is very friendly. It really gives you a feel of what your relatives went through to get here!

The trip to Ellis Island was a fascinating and atmospheric experience. Also one where you can get a greater insight in to the psyche of the US. The architecture is amazing in parts, particularly the sorting hall. At this point, the otherwise banal audio accompaniment is actually informative and interesting.

Despite being aware of the recent hurricane, nothing was said when buying tickets that some displays were out of action and that there was a very limited food service. The latter was clearly struggling to cope.

I have been to Ellis Island a few times and I always learn new things when I visit. The museum was still under repair from the last hurricane but we saw the presentation and film from a very knowledgable park ranger. The buildings are amazingly in great shape. If you have not taken the time to see Ellis Island, give it a go. I think the museum will not fully reopen until later this year.
