Here is an opportunity to learn something about why the United States is the melting pot of the world. You will see what people who came to this country at the turn of the 19th century had to go through to enter. If you have relatives who came here through Ellis Island you can look up which ship brought them. Besides the history, it is a lovely place to walk around and picnic. You also get great water views and the NY skyline.

Well worth the visit and one of my favourite attractions. Beautifully put together and very moving reading about the families who left their homelands.

This was an ok tour, felt there was more they could have done on the immigrants coming through here. Fascinating to see all the old money and items that people brought with them

Can't you just see, smell and hear the sights and sounds of the thousands upon thousands of immigrants who entered New York via this entryway to the United States...the land of opportunity. One afternoon will not be enough! You will want to return. A January day, bitter cold was still the Best Experience I've had in Manhattan traveling via Ferry from Manhattan to Ellis Island (the only way to travel there). Nice coffee shop with good selections; lovely bookshop; type in your Family Name to get a date and more information on their immigration situation. Enjoy! You will appreciate your heritage and kiss the ground that you walk on...Ah! To be an American!

I don't have family ties to Ellis - if I did I would find this place more significant even though I'm sure my family has similar experiences in their ports of entry. It was very interesting to learn about the immigrants and their flight while they setting the US. What they went through was arduous and commendable. I also learned I wouldn't be allowed admittance because of the rules! ha!
