Owner description: Manhattan by Sail has a diverse little fleet of ships that sail the NY Harbor daily and a corresponding myriad of options for any and all who want to experience the thrill of sailing in the world’s greatest harbor. Our newest addition is the Clipper City, a 158-ft. tall ship that can accommodate up to 150 passengers. A more intimate experience can be had on the Shearwater, a historic schooner with capacity up to 48 passengers.

This was one of the attractions on the all loops +3 attractions on the Grayline hop on/off bus. $39 per adult. Really appealed to us. Had some difficulty initially find where it was moored as its recently moved. (its now right next to the Staten Island Terminal). Trip is 90 mins . You're invited by the crew to help hoist the sails. There's a bar and plenty of places to relax and enjoy the fresh air whilst taking in the sights of Governors and Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. One of the most enjoyable and relaxed things we did in NYC. Recommended!.

We saw this attraction in the hotel brochure offering 20% discount. A twilight cruise 7 -9 pm was $32.00 per person. We had difficulty finding a parking spot near the pier and were the last to board, so had to stand. The raising of the sails was interesting. No narration during the sail, which would have been helpful. Crew just tended to the business of the sailing without any interaction. However we got some beautiful sunset photo's with the statue of liberty in silhouette. We did not partake of the on board bar, so unsure what the drink prices were, but did see the servings were small. Upon de boarding they had a tip jar. Purchase tickets PRIOR to ensure a space. They do have a 'stand by' line however.

Of all the sails, the twilight sail is the one most like to get booked up ahead of your trip. So if you want it, you have to roll the dice. If they think it's dangerous, they'll cancel and if it's a short trip (like a long weekend), you're probably out of luck trying to arrange something else on short notice. And if it rains, you have to go in the rain. And if it's a thunderstorm, with lightning, that apparently isn't dangerous because they wouldn't refund amidst the lightning strikes. The stars lined up badly for us. It wasn't raining when we got on the subway, but we emerged from the subway into a torrential thunderstorm and couldn't make it to the dock. I think they should have refunded. At the same time, I probably shouldn't have risked booking if there was any hint of rain.

You really have to plan ahead to take the once a week jazz cruise during the Summer months on the Clipper City and when you do you’re in for a nice evening sail listening to a 3 piece jazz combo play. Our 2-hr sail was cut short by a half hour due to a thunderstorm coming in and the crew didn’t want us to be caught in in. As a consolation we were treated to a free drink as we took in the sight of the Statue of Liberty light against the black night. The night sailing is a different experience where you can enjoy the night breezes and the lights of the NY skyline without the distractions of the water traffic during the day.

The Clipper casts off from Battery Park next to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and can enjoy a view of the Statue of Liberty from the dock as well. There are restrooms behind the nearby restaurant as well as two on board the ship.
