You can see the better part of most of NYC attractions on your own. Use public transportation or you can walk to a lot of them. You won't see everything ,but you'll see plenty.

We pre booked thE VIP package from UK not realising you have to pick your tickets up in NYC they are not sent to UK so you have to go to a pick up point once you are there. VIP package was waste of money it doesn't get you to front of queue in any of the main attractions. We paid more for it in UK than we could have got in NYC.
Red buses were old, some of the headphones sockets didn't work and one of the guides in particular was offensive and patronising and then had the cheek to stand with a sock waiting for a tip as we left the bus.
Luckily we could use Gray line buses with this package and they seemed better quality buses and better guides. We booked the 3 day package but didn't have time to do all the things we had paid for.
On the plus we did see plenty of the city even if it was slower than the subway.

The blue buses are definitely a bit beyond their use by date. The service seems okay considering NY traffic so can't compare here but the buses with the canopies, the canopies are so damaged you can't see much, one bus the headsets didn't works. I can see as a new generation of buses comes on line these will die a natural death.

This is our 3rd time to NY and stupidly booked the city sights bus tour this time.. (this is the bluebus). We were left waiting for 80 mins for a bus at ground zero that should just never showed. We ended up getting a taxi back to our hotel on 52nd and 7th. There were several other people waiting at the same stop that had to do the same thing. Very expensive and very frustrating. The tour guides on the buses were also poor to say the least they hummed and hawed and tried to fill gaps when they didn’t have any info. We jumped off 3 of the buses and each of the guides was very disappointing . We had done the loops before but for a first time visitor to the city it would have been very disappointing,.

Worth the money, plenty of buses. Although some were a little dirty. You can also use other closed in services if it is wet
