Stayed a week at the Margot in April. The location is wonderful for exploring Spanish Harlem, Harlem, the Upper East Side and Museum Mile. Plenty of buses and two subway stops nearby. Our only location issue was it was a little too far to get back for a freshen-up between a day out exploring and an evening show. Area felt very safe and loved being so close to Central Park.
Spend an evening at the FB Lounge (just around the corner) and for a real El Barrio experience, grab breakfast at Triple a's. Todd has compiled a nice folder of restaurant suggestions.
The room would be perfect for a couple, but was a little cramped for two friends who needed their own beds.

We really enjoyed staying at Margot. (Last time I stayed at Empire Hotel that was unreasonnably expensive and had a lot of drawbacks. So I was surprised to find this wonderful place)
Location - 2 blocks from Central Park, very close to 2 subway stations and Museum mile.
There are a lot of nice restaurants ande deli stores nearby. The neighbourhoud is safe and quiet.
Room - we had room 6 at 2nd floor - it was spacious with 1 queen bed and a sofa, a fridge. Room is clean and nicely decorated. Windows overlooked a yard, so it was quiet at night. However you might hear subway outside the house. But don't be afraid - at night it's very calm.
I would like to thank the owner of Margot - Todd. He was really helpful and kind. Thank you so much and good luck to you

Extremely clean. Sort of classic French minimalist decor with what appears to be a lot of authentic furniture. We had a street side room, but no trouble with traffic noise. Lots of sun in the AM. Didn't hear a peep out of any other guests, just the occasional footsteps on the stairs. Maid service during your stay is on request for a fee, but if you're only there a few days you don't really need it anyway. No issues with keys or bill - everything was very smooth.

Guest book contains a thoughtful collection of house rules, tips on restaurants in the 'hood, and other activities and points of interest. Good location - a few blocks from the train, easy walk to Central Park and Museum Mile. We felt very safe. Only small disappointment was that the neighborhood was pretty dead after about 10pm, so if you're planning a late night, eat dinner elsewhere before you return to your room.

This was a great little place once we found it - arrived in the worst snow storm NYC has had for 30 years! The is no sign above the door so it just looks like a normal house. Todd the owner was extremely helpful with how to get around and where to eat locally. The room was charming and rustic without being dated or lacking in any amenties. Also it was lovely and warm at all times. Lots of space, a perfect base from which to explore. It is also rather peaceful which is great. The area is officially called East Harlem - don't let that put you off. Having lived in London for 7 years I can honestly say this area was safer than Battersea or Fulham on a Saturday night. It was also great because cabbies thought you lived there and didn't think you were locals. There are lots of little cafe's within a 5 mins stroll for breakfast. The East Harlem Cafe was a particular favourite and as it is right across from the subway at 103rd extremely useful. The subway is about a 3 min walk away and that gets you into Midtown where most of the tourist attractions are, or if you want somewhere on the West side of the park there is a subway at 110th (Central Park North) which is less than a 10 mins walk away part;y across central park. 12 mins on the subway from Grand Central - excellent.

We arrived at Margot's after a long day travelling from the UK. A yellow cab will transfer you from JFK for a flat rate of $45; do NOT get taken in by the guys who collar you straight away offering rates of $65! We rang the basement apartment bell as directed in our email booking confirmation and were greeted by the rather dapper Todd.

Todd was the perfect gentleman (carrying my wife's bags up to the room for her) and settled about welcoming us to NYC, dispelling the myths about the city and giving us the run-down on the local neighbourhood. He told us how safe the area and the city was and I must admit, I thought it was a bit of patter initially but after spending 4 days wondering around New York City I can confirm it is one of the safest and friendliest cities I have ever visited in my life!

Margot's provides each guest with a folder which contains details of subways, eateries and any other local amenity you might need. Of these recommendations Todd earmarked his personal favourites and I must say he was right (visit the Mexican restaurant "El Paso" and "Joy Burger"; both on the left heading downtown on Lexington), all the comments in previous reviews about his friendly nature and helpful advice are absolutely true.

Margot's itself is clean and beautifully decorated and the facilities are excellent (fridge, microwave, coffee maker and personal heating thermostat in our room and I assume in each). Our bed was firm and comfortable and the fact that the building-front is left traditional brownstone makes it feel as though you have your own New York apartment for a few nights.

Margot's location is fantastic: 3 blocks from Central Park (we walked the full length South into Manhattan one day we were there), only 15 minutes or so on the subway to get into the city centre and in a neighbourhood thriving with restaurants and bars.

In conclusion: I cannot fault Margot Guest House and would recommend it to anyone visiting NYC for the first or fiftieth time. If we venture that way again (which I hope we will!) I would definitely stay again.

We stayed at Margot guest house in October 2010 for seven nights and we would definitely return here again.
This guesthouse is close to public transport, especially the subway, which we used every day. It is a short subway ride to Times Square or if you are adventurous you can walk there.
We were able to walk to Central Park and the Guggenheim museum ( and others ) in 10-15 minutes. There are also many restaurants within walking distance, catering to all budgets and tastes.
The room is very cosy, but large enough to not feel cramped.
We stayed in two different rooms ( due to this place being very popular).
The bed is very very comfortable ( in fact I now feel I need a new bed at home after sleeping in such a comfortable bed.)
There was a couch, a little table with two chairs, a fridge, microwave and kitchen needs.
The windows are double glazed which makes the rooms fairly quiet. You can hear the subway, but it did not affect our sleep and I am a very light sleeper!
The bathroom was charming and very clean.
The neighbourhood is vibrant and you get a real feel for the lifestyle, being a little bit out of the main city area. I felt safer in this area of New York than I do in some cities here in Australia.
Todd, the host, is extremely helpful with advice on restaurants, places of interest and just negotiating New York.
