“Wonderful Upscale Italian Restaurant in New York City”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2013

Marea is a beautiful high end Italian restaurant located on Central Park South not far from Columbus Circle. It is probably the most upscale Italian restaurant (outside of Italy) that I have eaten in since Mama Leone’s many years ago. The restaurant is beautiful, the food was perfect and the overall ambiance was excellent. My wife and I ate dinner there on a Saturday evening, and it was half full when we got there, but quite full by the end of our meal, but the service was perfect throughout.

They have a wonderful menu and a wonderful wine selection. We had chef’s surprise appetizers (salmon tartare), “zuppa” with Sicilian couscous and shellfish, grilled octopus (picture attached), which was the most succulent octopus I have ever had, a seafood dish with lump crabmeat, sea urchin and basil, and swordfish with pumpkin puree, beans, greens, and almonds. The swordfish was just perfect and a picture is attached.

We also had a couple of glasses of nice wine (a Sancerre and an Avellino), and washed it all down with Vin Santo and Moscato d’Asti. The chef also sent out a dessert surprise (2 tiny profiterols), and we had a portion of cheese as well. Everything was perfect. The price was $205 + tip.

“Best seafood in NYC”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2013

We had lunch at 2:30 on a Saturday and had no idea this was a 2 Star Michelin restaurant but very soon understood why. It was spectacular in every way. When a course arrived, several wait staff delivered it effortlessly. When the course was completed, it was removed as carefully and quickly.

“MaMarea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013

Marea is a very good Italian Seafood restaurant right across from Central Park. We stopped in for a late lunch, 2:30 reservation. They offered us a table right away, but we chose to have a drink at the bar. I loved the decor. Very simple, wood on the floors and walls polished so highly that it looks like tortoise shell. Marea means "tides" and it had a very classy nautical theme. We started with an assortment of oysters, $40.00 a dozen. High, but it's NYC. The two course prix fixe lunch is $45.00pp. My husband had the lobster salad, extra $10.00, and I had the tuna tatar for appetizers. His main dish was the halibut and I had the scallops. Presentations were lovely. Everything was wonderful, even though the halibut could have been cooked for a bit less time, still delicious. Desserts are quite adventurous, we shared a chocolate, caramel and pistachio treat that was awesome. All in all this was a very nice fine dining experience.

“Always excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013

This is approximately the 6th time we have eaten there. It is a must visit when we go to NY. They do pasta perfectly and the seafood is excellent. The only glitch came with the wine but they quickly recovered. We went with wine pairings. The selections were good as the sommelier is quite good. But after the 2d course he passed us off to someone else without properly instructing. We had requested a light red with the main course rather than white. Not only did the sub bring a white but he brought a white that I had already had with the first course. The sommelier jumped back in and remedied it with an excellent suggestion. So another good experience with excellent food.

“exceptional food and service, but pricey.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013

Six of us ate here after four went to the theater. They were most accommodating to fit in two additional guests on one day's notice. The food was as memorable as ever - wonderful salads and crudo, terrific pastas, great fish, and terrific desserts. The only problem was that the bill was quite high and probably included a tip which the competent waitress did not tell us, so we ended up overtipping outrageously, i.e. 40%. Bread especially their crusty brown was wonderful and amuses both before and after dinner were spectacular.
