The Shop at Andaz was a delightful restaurant experience with a friend before a Broadway show. We had hoped to eat across the street (at Bryant Park Grill behind the NYC Public Library) but they were closed for a private event. Often hotel restaurants cater to a captive audience and thus aren't the best options available so it was with trepidation that we tried the Shop. Great surprise and we were so glad we ate there. The diver scallops were cooked to perfection, but the real gem was the duck breast. Crispy on the outside, as it should be, and succulent (although I hate that word, it fits) on the inside. We enjoyed reading the back of the menu listing the local sources--which of course made the food taste even better. They were featuring a special salad that evening: a watermelon/mint/watercress salad that was perfect for a beautiful summer evening. We finished by sharing a mud cake portion which was served with fresh orange slices. It was a good thing we shared, fabulous but rich! Service was good, as was all the service we experienced during our Andaz stay. Our NYC resident hosts were glad to hear of our good experience at the Shop and plan to dine there soon as it is apparently difficult to find a good restaurant in that general area...not that I would know! It was a great experience and I highly recommend the Shop at Andaz.

The egg skillets are great. The one with Chorizo and the one with Asparagus are my favorite. They get all of their ingredients locally and what they don't make in house, they get locally as well and tell you right on the back of the menu where everything is from.

The coffee is suburb.

Simple and modern decor, great atmosphere and light. I enjoyed the coffee shop for a business meeting and would recommend it to anyone.
Could be a nice spot for a date or dinner with friends.

Midtown can be a tough place to find a good restaurant. Across the street from the NYC Public Library at Fifth Ave and 41st Street is the Hyatt Andaz Hotel. The restaurant, called "The Shop" is a fantastic place for lunch or dinner. It's lovely and spacious with a menu of simple but delicious food from local purveyors. And the cocktail menu is fabulous! It's not cheap, but it's worth it. Downstairs is a huge bar that is packed in the evening. The bar crowd definitely is local; the restaurant crowd is a mix of New Yorkers and guests. This might not be a selling point if you want a real NYC experience, but I love The Shop because it makes me feel like I'm very far away from midtown Manhattan.

Features farm fresh locally grown foods. I had eggs, hashbrowns and locally made sausages served in a cast iron skillet. Fun for visitors, but the place seemed filled with locals.
Great service - even though we had a 2 year old at the table. Friendly, understanding staff.
Right on 5th Avenue across from Bryant Park.
