“Don't miss a Gospel worship”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013

We went to Harlem on a Sunday morning. We intended to walk around the neighbourhood before the Gospel Worship, but some private issues didn't allowed us much time to walk around. The little we did, enjoyed us a lot. We went to Canaan Baptist Church, the worship was very beautiful, with many chorus parts. Be prepared for a 2 hours cult, because it is not nice or respectful to go out before the end. Everything worthed the visit: people well dressed, the chorus, the way people participate, and the way the whole cult is conducted, not only by the reverend, but also by person of the comunity, invited person from other comunities and the youth... The subject this day was the african-american heritage, so there were some very interesting and strong talking. A new yorker had told me it was kind to donate 10 dolars per person. We did this, and I think it is kind to donate this amount, as it is so beautiful to watch, and the church uses this money for comunity issues... After the worship we went walking to the restaurant we had reserved, although it was a little far from the church (Dino's Barbeque, also recommended), and it was pretty safe, even in some parts less beautiful. It is interesting to know a different and very typical part of NYC... Our original plan was to start our walking at the Columbia University, passing the St Johns Divine Cathedral, then down through St Nicholas to the church. We didn't do it, because os some private issues, but some can try doing it... If you go by metro, pay attention because on Sundays some lines doesn't run... We tried to get the blue C line at 50st station, and it wasn't running on Sundays...

“A must See”

If you have never been there, get going before it becomes more gentrified. Do not miss any of the Sunday brunch places.

“First Time Visiting Harlem, NYC”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

Visit Harlem for the first time. Harlem is a little different.. Rich in History. The people/attitude, typical New Yorkers. The person that said it was scary, no different from any other povished community ( black, white, latino, asian,). The bottom line. You don't go now where in NYC alone this include your nicer areas of NYC. NYC is NYC.

However, the food in Harlem is great!! I highly recommend the Chocolate Restaurant Lounge an the red velvet pancakes and the french toast and chicken wings are my favorite. Location the corner of 120 and 8th.
