I love the Upper West Side! Picture this, Brownstones, tree lined streets. One end is Central Park and the other side the Hudson.

In between you have Lincoln Center, the opera and ballet center of the world. Columbus Street filled with delicious restaurants from all around the world.

Large sidewalks perfect for walking and strolling around with your family or alone.

West Side is also known to be more where the actors, musicians and artists live since most of them are turned down from the Upper East side, more snobbish older money lives.

So you never know who you'll bump into on the street or be sitting next to at an outdoor cafe.

My family and I just finished up an excellent five day stay on the upper west side, at 79th and Amsterdam. We loved the neighborhood and would absolutely choose this area again. there are wonderful restaurants in the area. It is very walkable and pleasant, and if you want to visit another part of the city, the subway is just a short walk away. Highly recommend if you are looking for a more authentic New York experience, not just Times Square.

Stayed upper west side at the beginning of July. Absolutely loved this area. A great vibe and the locals were all friendly. Leafy wide avenue's, parks alongside a decent array of eateries, bars, shops and my favourite's - deli's.

With central park in its midst, Broadway only a couple of blocks away and Times Sq a short taxi ride this is the place to stay. I loved all the buildings, the greenery and the general buzz of Manhattan.

We were here for independence day so went down to see Macy's Fireworks at the Hudson River. Brilliant experience and within walking distance.

NYC is awesome.

The Upper West Side lies between Central Park and the Hudson River and between West 59th Street and West 110th Street. Some of the most desirable properties in the city are on Central Park West, but much of the area lacks street life.

We wandered round here a few times as it was not too far from out hotel, with Central Park on one side we even strolled to the Natural History Museum whilst admiring the properties such as the Dakota.

The Upper West Side is an upmarket, residential area. It has the reputation of being one of the city’s cultural, intellectual hubs. Columbia University is located here and the Lincoln Centre is located at the south end.

This is for the Europeans travelling to New York. If you are flying into N.Y. through J.F.K. the taxi ride to Manhattan is a fixed price in a yellow cab, taking about 50 mins on a good run and about
80 mins on a bad one. When in Manhattan think like an American, look at the traffic direction and when entering the subway go down on the side of the street in the direction of the way you want to go. If you think you can cross over underground in most cases you will be wrong. Buy a $6 dollar ticket to ride [two trips approx] there is a $1 dharge for the ticket but you can keep topping it up. The machines are touch screen and take notes [face up only].
We stay in the Upper West Side 70th street -80th street around Broadway, its quieter, easy access to the Hudson River walks, Central Park, Museums and Galleries. The 1 subway stops at 72nd and 79th and goes all the way through to Battery Park at the south end. Use the 1 as some of the other trains are express and do not stop at every station. Its an easy ride, crowded at times but fast and you will not hear what the driver is saying over the speakers so invest in a subway map.
If you want to look for food you are used to eating try Zabars on Broadway between 80th and 81st on the west side of the road. You will not be dissapointed, and you will want to take the store home with you. Enjoy New York.
