With regular departures and being completely free I was very impressed by the SIF. The views back to the skylines are great, and you get a good view of the Statue of Liberty without having to pay for one of the specific tours.

The journey takes under 30 mins and if you are quick you can make it on a ferry that returns within minutes - so it wont eat into much of your day.

We were luck to get two different style of boats during our round trip - the first which had open sides you could walk along and get great photos. The second was fully enclosed so you would have to take photos through the glass - try and get the former for better shots and a better experience!

Nick

The cheapest way to see the Statue of Liberty (free!). Offers good views of the lady and also gives you the opportunity to see some of the hustle and bustle on the waterway. Also offers a unique view of Manhatten Island. If you want to see Lady Liberty and are not fussed about getting close up and want to avoid the security queues, here's the way to do it.

If you are short of time and want to see the Statue of Liberty - the Staten Island Ferry service is the way to go, This is free ferry that runs between Manhattan and Staten Islands so you can get great photos of the statue and surronds. It was pretty crowded the day we went as it was Christmas & New Year holiday period - if you are like me and didn't need to get up close and personal with Liberty - this is the way to go.The round trip took about 2 hours - you can stay and explore Staten Island if you like.

If you have few days in the city and do not want to invest 1 morning or afternoon to visit the statue but want at least to see it... This is the best soltution.
You can take the Staten island ferry, close to Battery Park... they leave frequently and you will take around 20-30 minutes each way. It is free.
You will see the statue and even be able to take some pictures (in the December we got one closed, but in March one with open balcony...)
You can do it even by night.
