All passengers are required to comply with applicable U.S. Coast Guard Security Regulations regardless of which level they board from. The Staten Island Ferry does not carry cars.

The ferry is about 20 minutes in each direction. You cannot stay on board to return immediately. You must exit and wait in the terminal for about 30 minutes. During the hottest week in history (at least in my mind) we rode the ferry and enjoyed the blistering breezes. Lots of photo ops, fun ride for kids. And FREE!

You can see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, but don't get particularly close. Don't dawdle if you want to get a good place as the outside area is small. It is not a round trip and you must go ashore. Most people go straight to the to waiting room to go straight back.

This is the way to go. The State Island Ferry is free and runs 24/7. It goes from Manhattan to State Island, offering great skyline views and passing the Statue of Liberty along the way. The ferry terminals on both sides do not have enough seating, but they are clean and have bathrooms. We went later in the evening and got to leave Manhattan in the daylight and return at night. That was a good way to get both kinds of photos.

When we got to Staten Island, we walked their boardwalk, killed some time, and went back to the terminal to get right back on the next boat. It was a nice thing to do on a Sunday night when not much else was going on.

The service is very good. You have a Ferry every half an hour. You can see Mahattan from the sea, and the Statue of Liberty. Staten Island is very interesting.

this has to be the greatest tourist bargain in america, a full cruise of the new york harbor at no charge whatsoever, and the interchange with travelers all by itself is priceless, yet there is no charge... we had a great time going over by daylight, back by night, and even the concessions are fairly priced by new york standards... highest recommendation
