Have used this ferry multiple times to get to staten island, and I think it is brilliant! The wait to get in a ferry is never longer than 20 mins, crossing time is around 20 mins and you also pass the statue of liberty....all for free! The first time I went (2008) I used the ferry purely because it was free, and ended up watching the staten island Yankees play, but I was curious about what else the island had to offer, which would never have occurred to me without the free ferry. This time (2012) I ventured out to the zoo, then spent a whole afternoon exploring a park, before returning after dark, simply awesome to look at all the buildings lit up as you sail back! Views/an experience like this doesn't come cheap usually so I bring you back to my first question.....why wouldn't you?!

Enjoy, and listen to the heavy accents of the daily commuters. Now, this is real New York, and it's cheap, too. Take a round trip ride and lots of snapshots.

Easy to find, ferry departs every 30 minutes. Passes Liberty statue and Ellis island along the way. Great views of manhattan skyline. Plenty of photo opportunities. At Staten Island you have to disembark, so a quick run around the corner (with many others!) to get back on the returning ferry which left within minutes. One hour well spent, and FREE!

This is worth taking just for the view back on to the city, but at this time of the year it is bitterly cold. Take your camera and if you can take the ferry closer to sunset and you might get some amazing photos with the light behind you and on the buildings.

We were able to get some great pictures on the ferry of the skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Verrazano Bridge. Take the R subway to Whitehall station and when you exit the subway station you are right smack dab in front of the ferry terminal. It was also relaxing and allowed you to get off your feet for a while after walking all over the city.
