There is no better way to see lower Manhattan, the New York harbor and the Statue of Liberty (from a distance) then the Staten Island Ferry. The best part is it's FREE. The ferries are on a regular enough schedule no special planning is needed. If you have some extra time you can take the train to Tottenvile so get the feel of the average New York suburban commuter. If that doesn't interest you, hop on the next ferry back to Manhattan. Easy to get to via public transportation..

The free service between Manhattan and Staten Island gives you a feeling of (a) having done something a real New Yorker would do and (b) smug satisfaction that you didn't pay one of the commercial cruise operators to show you the Statue of Liberty. OK, the commercial operators do get you closer to the lady with the torch, but for the purposes of taking in the views and seeing the statue and the Manhattan and NJ skylines, the ferry does a magnificent job. Bring a camera! The other bonus is that Staten Island itself is a very different slice of New York and you can spend a pleasant hour or so looking at the neighbourhood near the ferry terminal if you choose. Ferries run every 30 minutes in each direction. Did I mention that it's FREE?

I often take the ferry from Staten Island to mnhattan. the trip is only about half an hour, but is very relaxing. Tourist like it becasue they get to see the Stateu of Liberty from the water. I like it because I sit on the Brooklyn side that is quiet.

I couldn't get over the fact that this service was free, I was there in May and it was REALLY hot so I decided to jump on the Staten Island Ferry to get a bit of a breeze, it was really enjoyable and quite fun and gives you a brilliant view of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
