“Mixed Bag or Oasis - all in point of view”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

If you are a person who still chooses to smoke, you will find Radio City an Oasis in Manhattan. If not, well, your stay may be a challenge. If you are one of the self-appointed smoking abolitionists, look elsewhere. We reserved the Penthouse, but due to unforeseen mechanical issues, it was not available when we checked in. While we were disappointed, the management offered us an acceptable alternative. The "apartments" are full of funky charm and convenience in place of "chic" efficiency. Small kitchens work well, big screen televisions are new, rooms are clean, staff is distant but effective, and mattress warning is on the "extra firm" side. Location in Manhattan at W. 49th between Avenue of the Americas and 7th Ave is the best reason to stay here. Whether you will enjoy Radio City Apartments depends very much on your style of travel. If you love the slick contemporary look of a Hilton or Crowne Plaza or the dated opulence of something overlooking Central Park, and you truly enjoy the act of placing five dollar bills into outstretched hands of hotel staff every time you have a random thought - you won't like it here. If however, you want to have a memorable stay in a perfect Manhattan location and not break the bank, where you can end the day in your own room with a brandy and a cigar, this may very possibly be your new favorite hotel. All in all, for us, it was a great stay and we will be returning.

We stayed here for a 3 day weekend trip to NYC and chose it because it was the most affordable place we could find in the heart of the touristy area. Almost everything you want to do is within walking distance. Times square and Rockefeller center are 5 min walks, most of the broadway shows are a 5 min walk, central park is about a 15-20 min walk. The 47th street subway station is just at the end of the block. There is also another station with more lines a few blocks away. Plenty of good restaurants within walking distance as well.

Only downsides are that you can hear the street noise (not a big deal for us and didn't prevent us from sleeping) and when they "hold" the luggage for you during the day, it just means they leave it in the lobby...there is no separate rooms. They chain each party's bags together, but if I had known this in advance I would have purchased the luggage locks for zippers just to be safe.

We would happily stay here again.

My husband and I first stayed at RCA in September 2008, which was our first trip to NYC. For our second trip last month, after giving serious consideration to another hotel due to discount I would get through a contact at work, we decided to stick to what we knew and book again with RCA. I'm very glad we did.

Due to a delayed flight and a 90-minute queue at passport control, we didn't arrive at RCA until midnight. The receptionist welcomed us by name and with a big smile, checked us in rapidly and off we went to our apartment.

We stayed in the apartment next door to where we had been 4 years ago, and as before, it had all we needed - comfortable bed, clean bathroom, small kitchenette area. RCA feels like our New York home now and it take a lot for me to consider staying anywhere else on our next trip.

My husband and I were looking for an affordable hotel for a quick 2-day visit to midtown Manhattan. We were fortunate to find RC Apartments. The location was excellent... walkable to everything we wanted to see... NBC studio, Radio City Music Hall, 5th Avenue, Broadway, Times Square, Central Park. Of course at this rate, the rooms are small, but we weren't in New York to spend a lot of time in our hotel room. Our room was clean, the staff were very nice and accommodating. Would definitely stay here again on future visits to Manhattan!

Radio City Apartments are mini studio rooms. They come with a little kitchenette. We were in between 6th and 7th which was a great central location for all of our days events. We were close to the Broadway subway entrance. We were very close Radio City, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and the theater district. Since it is an older location, you do hear some of the street noise below. We met some people on the elevator who had been there several times and keep coming back due to the location and value. We have already told many friends and family about this location. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: If you enjoy seeing the street below, as for a room that overlooks 49th. We also had a corner unit...

My family are in the process of organising a much anticipated trip to New York in November 2013. My eldest son who is in remission from cancer is bringing his brother as a surprise gift for his 21st birthday and we also plan to join them within a day or two. As the younger chap is asthmatic we emailed Radio City Apartments to explain the necessity of a smoke-free room but even though it is a year in advance they emailed me to say that they CANNOT guarantee such a room. They also state that they "spray" smoking rooms so that there is "no odor". However, as I explained it is the actual residual nicotine in the atmosphere which causes health issues - an adverse reaction is something we quite reasonably expect to be able to prevent as far as is reasonably possible. It would appear that it is beyond reasonable accomadations in the Radio City Apartments. IF there ARE no-smoking apartments in the complex why can you not allocate one to a family where the health of two people is compromised and where that family has gone to the trouble of booking one whole year in advance, of emailing you (eldest son emailed and I also, so two emails) and, where that family is happily prepared to pay the $400 deposit requested for a no-smoking room? Where is the difficulty Radio City?
We had seen the review stating that four post-cancer patients were also refused to be guaranteed a similar apartment and they too had to look elsewhere. We had, in fact booked a two-bedroom apartment for a week but because of Radio City's "inability" to give us a clean, smoke-free apartment, we too had to cancel.
I wish to make it clear that I have never stayed in these Apartments but think it is helpful for people to know the attitude of the management to a reasonable request (not a whim) for something they say they have on offer but will not guarantee even to guests who cannot stay without it.
Considering the amount of positive reviews of these apartments it is a pity such an attitude should let the place down.
Would appreciate management's response
