“Lunch at the Plaza”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2009

On a recent Thanksgiving trip to NYC we had lunch at the Plaza. My husband and I both had lobster bisque, I had a chicken ceasar salad and my husband had a lunch salad as well. We had three glasses of wine. The lobster bisque was awsome. There were big chunks of lobster and the bisque was so good I could have licked my bowl. The salads were nothing to write home about, but they were still good. The service was impeccable.

“Thanksgiving Prix Fix Dinner”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2009

Staying at the Plaza for the Thanksgiving weekend, we looked for a nice restaurant to enjoy a somewhat traditional dinner. We booked with the Oak Room, in the hotel but according to our waiter, independently owned and managed. The place was packed when we arrived at 7 p.m., but we were immediately seated. The tables were very close and the room very noisy. The menu offered several choices for a three-course meal at $95 plus mandatory 18% tip. We both had green salads: roast turkey breast, stuffing in a pastry beggar's purse, cranberry relish; and choice of desert. The food was average to good, but our waiter was obviously covering too many tables, had no time to be at all attentive or for any polite chit-chat, so the service was impersonal and disappointing. The notice posted at the maitre'd's stand stated, "Proper Attire Required," but not enforced, with about a third of the male diners wearing t-shirts or sweatshirts, blue jeans, and sneakers. Maybe a sign of the times, but still disappointing for a holiday event. This was an overpriced experience; I would have preferred a higher tariff with fewer diners and better service.

“It ain't what it used to be”

Get rid of the piano player (and piano) and demolish a great bar menu, and now you have the disappointing Oak Room Bar at the Plaza Hotel in New York city. Add to that spotty service and an aawful Gimlet, and you have a loser of a place. Say good-bye to an old favorite and lively haunt. Cross this one off your list!

“One of the highlights of our trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2009

We stumbled into the Oak Room on accident, we were in awe of the Plaza and wanted to just dash in and have a drink, we were not overly dressed and were in flip flops but my mother and I were greeted like we were movie stars. We sat at the bar and everyone was friendly, joking and telling stories. Ronnie our bartender made amazing drinks and kept us entertained. We learned about other people at the bar and really just felt like we were enjoying the best that New York had to offer. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting, this place was amazing!
