After Hurricane Sandy, there was a lot of damage to the park paved walkways. That, and on-going construction to the pier nearby has made the park almost inaccessible. Most of the tables and benches are gone, so there is not a of room to lounge about. To top it off, an "Urban Farm" now takes up a large chunk of the park. In the summers, the place is jam-packed with tourists crammed into the small areas that are not roped off due to construction or repairs. Once the repairs are over, there should be a lot more space to move around.
