Owner description: Union Square has a year-round greenmarket, where you can sample goods from local farmers. It also has several playgrounds, a lively holiday market, and benches where you can watch a slice of New York go by.

“A green, safe place with a good playground”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

I've been to Union Square park and its environs many, many times over the past several years. Union Square Park has become one of my favorite parks in the City. It's not large, spanning from 14th St. to 17th St., but it is lovely, with older trees and many, many park benches. There's also a good playground, with separate sections for babies/toddlers and for school-age kids. The latter has a "spinning wheel" that the kids can sit on and get dizzy (to their infinite delight), and a metal climbing cone (you have to see it to understand what it is) that is good for kids 6 yo and up. There are also slides, and things to balance on. Union Sq. park also is, in my experience, safe even after dark because it's well lit and in a well traveled area. The Union Sq. subway stop is serviced by the N,Q, &R lines; the L line; and the 4,5&6 lines, and there are several other subway stops within walking distance. There is a lot of shopping, restaurants and even a hotel (the W) either contiguous or close by.

“Social but not nice looking.”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

It's a great gathering place but a nothing with nothing place to see. The park is very unattractive and the rebuild style incorporated was planned around making the former drug dealers from three and four decades past visible and nothing more. The dealers left but the new park was and is an eyesore. There are no longer dealers in the park and the place is very safe, but boring as all hell, and ugly too..

“What fun this is at Christmas!”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

At Christmas time red and white striped tents crowd the square with color, tastes, smells, and many wonderful hand-made items for sale. Do yourself a favor and come by!

“NYC Holiday Treat”
Reviewed December 25, 2012

The holiday markets - both Union Square and Columbus Circle turned out to be the perfect destination for travelers wanting to sample some of the city's best goodies and artists/retailers. We visited twice during our three day stay. Our first visit was by accident when we stumbled upon it after having dinner nearby. It was a great nighttime activity for me and my 10-year old son. We returned to buy more of the addictive Liddabit Sweets (Brooklyn) sea salt caramels and Milk Bar cookies from our first visit - this time to take home as gifts. I also purchased artwork from a talented artist, Kristiana Parn. For $20 for each signed print, I was able to buy one for each of my other children as well as one for me featuring a beautiful depiction of the Empire State Building in the winter time. Convenient location right on the subway line.
