Owner description: A trip to New York wouldn't be complete without a visit to the New-York Historical Society with its four centuries of history and art - plus the only Children's History Museum in the area. It hits the spot for anyone craving an offbeat (and often surprising) bite of the city's culture easily digested in an hour or two. Quirky, smart, immersive and across the street from beautiful Central Park, it offers a rich taste of the city. You know the city - now hear the stories. Witness New York's rise from remote outpost to city at the center of the world in our 18-minute panoramic film experience, New York Story, in surround-sound on a 75-foot screen. Then travel through time in visionary exhibitions and an entire floor of children's galleries that show why this city has always captivated hearts and minds. "We were absolutely blown away by the film which manages to convey more about New York and its history than one could imagine ever being crammed into 18 minutes." - CL, New York NY History will break free from the textbooks and jump into your life! Hungry for more? The New-York Historical Society is your neighborhood destination for food and drink, whether you're grabbing a breakfast bite and a delicious cup of coffee at Parliament Coffee & Espresso Bar, or you're looking to relax with a delectable lunch and dinner and a glass of wine at Storico. Then explore the NYHistory Store for unique New York City gifts and exhibition-related merchandise.

As a museum lover, my favorite part about this museum was it's open storage on the top floor. They have racks of artifacts behind walls of glass, so you could see objects that wouldn't otherwise be on view. The intro movie by the museum lobby was also interesting. Lots of exhibits. We were here about an hour and a half.

Despite the countless times I've been to the American Museum of Natural History across the street, I only just visited this museum now. All of the staff I encountered were extremely friendly and helpful. Don't miss the screens and wall full of objects in the museum's lobby. They include a great multimedia presentation providing lots of info about the objects. I didn't go for a specific exhibit, but saw them all. The "AIDS in New York: The First Five Years" was heartbreaking, insightful and educational. I also really enjoyed the current exhibit, "The Civil War in 50 Objects," which includes objects spread throughout the collection. Also be sure to visit the collection on the top floor. It's full of objects ranging from Tiffany lamps to canes to a carriage. There's so much to see!

What a great place! We went to see the exhibit on AIDS and came out with so much more! Don't miss the 18 min film about NY. Very well done.

The AIDS exhibit was very good, although more focused on science than the early people impacted by the disease. Still, very powerful.

The Luce collection is amazing! Highly, Highly Recommend.

A great managable museum. The 20 minute "New York Story" multimedia film was worth the price of admission.

My mom and I happened upon this museum on our way to the Natural History Museum and to be honest it was the highlight of our day! Wonderfully laid out elements focusing on everything from immigration to the new world, women's rights, civil rights, the impact aids had on the city in the 80's, historical art.

The museum is not overly busy which allows you to walk through at your own pace and enjoy the exhibits in relative peace and quiet.

So glad we went, and I would definitely return again.

It's too bad the
