Food trucks limited in October. Spectacular views, nice walkways, very clean and easy to get to. Check website for special events for the holidays.
Must see and NOT crowded.

What a lovely little island!

It's barely a 5min ferry ride ($2 return) from the southern tip of Manhattan but you feel miles away, it's so quiet and peaceful.

It's also one of the places one can easily do with a stroller or a wheelchair.

There is castle Williams which was built as a defense fort, turned into jail, which you can visit. All the other buildings were closed to the public.

But one can imagine how lovely it was to live here, as either part of the army or coast guard community.

There's now a playground and a small urban farm on the southern part of the island (side furthest away from the ferry docs), you can bike all around the island (rent it on the island or bring your own), walk around and picnic. There are no restaurants or cafés, but there are food trucks.

No fear for kids to get lost or get run over by crazy traffic as there are almost no cars in the island.

Another bonus for visiting this little gem are the superb views of downtown Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis island, Brooklyin bridge, the confluence of the two rivers, many boats etc. Plus the swanky red deckchairs which are very instagrammable! :)

This is a true gem despite still being a work in progress. After a very short inexpensive $2 ferry ride, you arrive on this New York harbour island that once had a fort protecting the waters from intruders. The island is being transformed into a wonderful park with a road and pathway system throughout that provide the most incredible views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey, Staten Island, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Verrazano Bridge etc. from a distance. Take a hike, rent bicycles or surreys or just sit at a restaurant on a nice day. It's a place to truly relac away from the concrete jungle.

$1.00 ferry, for seniors takes you to an interesting place in the harbor. We spent a couple hours walking the promenade and viewing the organic gardens and art displays. Bike rentals popular.

My daughter and I spent a wonderful day on Govenors Island during our late summer holiday in New York. It was an easy train ride from our apartment in Brooklyn to the pier downtown Manhattan to get the ferry across. There were lots of people with the same idea so the departure terminal and ferry was packed but it was organized and the lines moved quickly. We enjoyed the short ferry ride over with great views of the skyline to stare at and before long we were there. It is lovely to just walk around and enjoy the grounds. There is a sort of food court on one side with lots of food trucks lined up with all manner of cuisine available but the lines were really long and slow at all of them. In the end we had soft service icecream for lunch because we were not willing to stand in line for anything more substantial. We really just spent the afternoon wondering around the island and enjoying the beautiful scenery. We had fun. We will rent bikes the next time. The entrance fee was only 2.00 so cheap.
