For two dollars (fee for ferry ride), you can have a great adventure. Beautiful views, great place to picnic, relax. Historical, as well as modern. Play miniature golf for free, see their exhibits, and just have a grand old time. Must do.

We spent a lovely, summer day on Governors Island, NY. My husband's father was stationed there in the 1960's so he and his siblings lived on the island for several years. This was his first time back as the island had been closed to visitors until rather recently. We took a ferry from Williamsburg, NY and rented bikes on the island. We were surprised to find a lot going on - an old-time baseball game, a badminton tournament and a crowd watching the FIFA match on a huge outdoor screen. We enjoyed fresh-made salads from one of the many food trucks. It was difficult not to indulge in all the food available there. We recommend a trip to Governors Island for anyone who enjoys history and being outdoors.
Free entry. Just the cost of a ferry ride.

I attended a function called The Jazz Age Lawn Party which was held on Governor's Island. I had never heard of Governor's Island and what a great surprise! The grounds were beautiful, as are the buildings. There are lovely sculptures and plenty of room for a picnic or for the kids to run around and play. It makes a terrific venue for a party or function - especially an outdoor one. There are food vendors and historic tours. Definitely something for everyone. The ferry ride was short, but fun - and free!

Governors Island is a great destination now but I am really excited about future plans. Although they have already accomplished some good things on the island, construction and remodelling are ongoing. I truly expect this to become a premier vacation destination in New York City.

We did the 90 minute walking historical tour with a ranger. I was a little leary because the ranger was really young. But he was knowledgeable and an effective communicator. We learned the history of the two forts on the island, the many faces of military uses and the history of woman soldiers that were trained on the island. I would definitely recommend this tour. I especially enjoyed going underground to the weapons storage area.

Future plans are continuing to develop one entire end of the island as a natural area with gardens, biking and walking paths, meadows, etc. Honestly it will be on a par with Central Park when it is done. And all for the bargain price of a $2.00 ferry ride.

Governor's Island used to be something of a well kept secret when it was in military, then Coastguard hands. Now, it is moving firmly down a civilian route with a rolling programme of re-furbishment, making it a better and better place to visit for a day out, especially in good weather and on a weekend when an event might be on. The high point has got to be the views from the Fort: there is no finer view of Manhattan, and of the harbour generally. Moreover, there is a free boat trip from the Downtown Ferry Terminal, or better still, a longer $6 ferry trip on the East River Ferry from Midtown. The island has a real sense of old New York and is highly recommended as a stop off for a unique view of New York.
