We visited this attraction with our young children in the summer. It was a wonderful and pleasant way to spend the day. We were lucky that they had a French festival this past summer. We enjoyed trying out all the antique amusement rides. Even without the festival there was really a lot to do on the island. There was bike rentals and very cute foot powered buggy's. There were different exhibits in a few of the buildings. Oh! and the boat was free... Wow, what fun. I think this attraction will be a new yearly tradition for our family

You take the boat which is for free and end up in a nice and quiet place full of trees and birds. You get the best view of New York City. You can eat nice food from a far away country and then have an ice-cream cone while walking alond the water. Great Saturday!

It's a little known secret that you can get to Governor's island for free from Battery Maritime Building located at 10 South Street, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan, starting 10am.

From there, you get an amazing view of Manhattan skyline and perfect place to picnic and cycle. If you didn't bring your own food, there are food cart selling very affordable lunches under 10 bucks. Check out the official website for what's going on.

Once a year they have a really cool 60's jazz party! Not to mention vintage car parade this year and other really fun art exhibits and old school play ground with kids carousels, and petting zoo.

This is a place for the family, especially for kids below 5.

Enjoy!

My whole family loved Governor's Island. From the Staten Island ferry we exited and about a half block more on the left was the terminal for the Governor's Island ferry. The ferry to the Island was really cool and sort of like a speedboat ferrry. Once on the Island one might see the very old buildings and farms there, but one could not miss the New York view it was amazing, like I never saw before from that angle. There are food courts and lots of rides for younger children with a merry go round. Nice shops with art and other Items. Then if that were not enough you could pet the farm animals or go to the playground with mini golf courses for free. The playground had a treehouse and a building constructed solely out of water bottles which resembled an igloo shape more. Great for picnics with friends or family. From time to time you may even catch a concert there. This is a must do if you are visiting or would like to take a nice day out.

We travelled on the free ferry on the last weekend of summer. Fantastic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Jersey. Couldn't get much information apart from the notice boards and feel we missed much of the history of the place. We didn't see anybody offering guided walks although there were a lot of guides close to the newly planted parkland area- which will be splendid when it is finished.
Lots of cheap food outlets with queues. Fairground areas. We walked around the available area and enjoyed the fresh air, but kept feeling it could be more interesting. It is worth the trip, but see if you can organise a guide.
