Governor's Island is a fantastic place to visit. You can catch great views from any part of the island. It is car free but you do have to be careful of bicyclists riding around. You have the option of bringing your own bicycle or renting one which is located by the dock. The island is not open year round and is only accessible by boat so be sure to check the website for dates and times. The boat mainly operates from Manhattan but during the summer the boats become operational from Brooklyn as well. One of my favorite place to visit is the Officer's mansion and you will see the amazing architecture and interior design. You will be able to get a close view of the Statue of Liberty at the north side of the island. There are many activities for children at the parade ground to keep them occupied. For those who enjoy watersports, you can rent out kayaks and they are located right by the docks. If you are hungry, there are food trucks and a small restaurant there. Check the website for more scheduled activities and events going on at Governor's.

Governor's Island is a perfect way to escape the fuzz and noise from Manhattan. Take the free ferry from lower Manhattan or Brooklyn and enjoy a peacefull day on this small island. You'll have great views on the Manhattan skyline and Lady Liberty. You can easily spend a full day there, just wandering around, ride a bike, eat an icecream, relax on one of the grassfields and enjoy the scenery.
Definitely recommended for people with kids too. Bring your picknick!! ;-)

My husband and I lived on Governor's Island from 1974-1978. We lived in Building 877, one of the now abandoned buildings on the Island. Our Daughter attended PS26. We had everything we needed there on the Island, Commissary/Exchange, Bowling, Swimming Pool, Medical, Church. My husband played the golf course almost every day after work and on weekends. I would watch the cruise ships arrive and depart from our window that looked out over New York Harbor. Our children played in front of 877 and in the playgrounds over at Building 866. Thanks so much for all the reviews. I look forward to returning as a tourist someday!!

I visited Governor's Island for a food festival over the summer. They had the main park in the middle set up with a music stage and dozens of food booths. The event itself was well-attended, well-orgainized, and a lot of fun. They have lots of similar activities out there all the time. The ferry ride out there was cool. The island property is very pretty, with big trees and winding roads everywhere. There are places to rent bicycles, which looked like it could be fun. The weird part is that there are a whole lot of large, old, vacant houses and buildings everywhere, giving the island sort of a haunted, ghost-like feel. I found myself imagining what life was like in some by-gone era when people actually inhabited those buildings, and it was ever-so-slightly creepy. Not creepy enough to keep me from going back, though, to attend a festival or concert that interests me. I wish they would renovate all those old buildings and put them to good use, like a children's camp or something. Seems like a waste.
