To my knowledge, this is the only place in NYC where you can claim a hammock with a view. Of course, you have to get there fairly early and then high tail it down to the southern end of the island (Picnic Point). The island is great for bike riding - bring your own or rent one there. And there are fabulous old buildings to explore (not all are open, but enough are that you can get an idea of the rest). And there's plenty grassy lawns for relaxing. I've taken some great naps in the grass on Governor's Island! If only they allowed dogs on the island, it would be perfect (for me). Despite that, it's still excellent.

Just to share a couple of "beware" tips: Those tandem bikes available for rent, may look fun but are SO SLOW and heavy - they feel more like exercise machines. You are better off renting a regular bicycle. Also all the food they are selling is that boardwalk overpriced fast food. Other than that there's more and more events that take place there every summer, many art installation by emerging artists. Also, you can come to the island from Manhattan and take another free ferry going to Brooklyn from another port just few steps away. That one will take you to the famous River cafe in Brooklyn.

When there aren't any major events it's a Free 2 minute ferry ride from Brooklyn or Manhattan. You can take your own bike on the ferry or rent one when you get to the island. It can get a little crowded while trying to bike the island because of all the kids and people just walking around but its still worth it. Wish we could bring our dogs but no pets allowed :( Portions of the island are closed off to the public. Bring a blanket lay out and get a tan. Dont forget your sunblock because I dont think that there is anywhere to buy it once you get there. No BBQing but you can bring a little something with you or eat from one of the vendors. Last time I went there was a place you could learn how to use the trapeze, painting for kids, and a few other activities. The homes beautiful and the views are amazing!

Finally they started using this amazing little space to do events all summer long. From huge concerts, even electronic music concerts to yoga and jazz. Best part is you get an amazing view of NYC. Its less than a 10 min slow boat ride away from the city, but there is fresh air and feels like you are on a little vacation.

we like to rent bikes and cruise the island. It is cool to see so much open space, so close to downtown Manhattan. ...best for locals or visitors with lots of time
