I have attended live performances at the Met, but since I don't live in NYC I mostly attend the Live in HD performances at a local movie theatre. Taking the 1.5 hour backstage tour was a real treat - seeing the workings of the enormous stage, the costume workshop, a dressing room, and a peek into a rehearsal room where two famous stars were in rehearsal. The tour guide was enormously knowledgable.
There is a lot of walking on the trip, and quite a bit of standing. One elderly woman brought a portable stool, which seemed to work well.

If in New York and an opera fan, you just have to go to the Met! I was fortunate to see an early performance of Borodin's Prince Igor. A long opera - 4.5 hours - with magnificant singing, playing, staging and dancing. The Met has brilliant screens by each seat for translation of the words being sung. This worked really smoothly and really made the opera accessible. This performance is sung in Russian. The building itself is also a work of art - lovely to see in active use.

I was totally thrilled to go and impressed by the performance. Thanks to the performers and all involved! 100% recommended.

Absolutely amazing experience!! Atmosphere great, performers fabulous, music fantastic. I was able to get standing orchestra tickets for Madama Butterfly and Prince Igor on the day of the performance at 10am. They were a bargain: 27 dollars. Interestingly, after the first act every person with the standing orchestra tickets managed to find a place to sit. You do not need to dress elegantly. There were many casual looking persons, especially the young ones. I loved watching at Chagall's paintings on the first floor after the performance!!

The building is amazing, especially the chandeliers and the staircase. The seats were comfortable and the display in your own language made it accessible to novices.

The sets were fabulous and the whole show was wonderful.

I felt that it went on too long however, and two intervals just extended it.

I don't know, as this is the only "first rate" opera house I've attended, but it has been a magical experience both times (now and 2010). Tonight was "The Enchanted Island", a charming pastiche featuring Domingo and Graham. Just driving by or walking up to Lincoln Center gives me a warm feeling and it really is a magical sensation just to enter, look at the lights, do some people watching (jeans?! really!?) Too bad that cava at intermission is $14, I stood in line for 10 minutes to get a flute and join in the party but after $130 for tickets that seemed a bit pricey. Either way it is a great experience and I will be back to visit every time I come to NYC.
