The church is under renovation, so many areas are blocked off. That said, it is still very beautiful architecture and I find the reverence heartwarming and moving.

The cathedral is being restored. There are lots of scaffolds and restoration processes going on. We dropped in while window shopping on 5th Avenue. It was warm and inviting. Although it is a solemn place and for us very calming. Such beauty should be fully respected and it is. It is a place for everyone to reflect and enjoy. It is free but it is you that will be compensated by this visit.

No visit to New York City is complete without a visit to The Cathedral of Saint Patrick on 5th Avenue. It's location on 5th Avenue implies of course that it figures in all of New York's famous parades. But the cathedral is truly a gem in it self.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral was opened formally on May 25, 1879. The newspapers hailed the new Cathedral as “the noblest temple ever raised in any land to the memory of Saint Patrick, and as the glory of Catholic America.”
When we lived in New York in the 1970's the cathedral was undergoing extensive restoration (in preparation for the 100th anniversary). The cathedral is currently undergoing an extensive new restoration. It is planned to be finished by the end of 2015. We will come back for the celebration of St. Patrick's Day in 2016. The cathedral can be visited during the restoration period.

When in NYC visit theCathedral to see the wonderful beauty of the building, however be aware there is a major renovation happening currently and best to visit during daylight hours.

This cathedral is a great example of Gothic architecture. Even though it is in the middle of renovations, go and make a donation, light a candle, admire the difficult work that went into this building, and perhaps offer up a prayer. Good security is all around, & bags are checked. All this helped to make me feel safe. I wish I had the time to visit for a Mass. Not a bad walk from my Sheraton location & Rockefeller Center is just across the street. Which you can see as you exit this beautiful cathedral.
