Owner description: High-rent neighborhood of New York City located along one side of Central Park, which is predominately residential with town homes and apartment buildings along with pricey shops, restaurants, and architectural gems such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Cooper-Hewitt.

86th Street on the Lexington subway line (4,5,6) is an inevitability if museums are involved. OK, there are other ways to get there but the majority will get to walk from 86th Street and Lex. through the residential section of the Upper East Side for the Guggenheim, Met. Museum, the Neue Gallerie, the Frick collection, and a few other cultural icons. It's called Museum Mile along Fifth Avenue. The Upper East Side also has Hunter College, various Commercial Galleries and a bevy of small museums. Walking from the subway to the Met. Museum, however, gives me enough of the residential side of UES to satisfy any curiosity I might have..

After writing reviews about Nolita and Tribeca, two neighborhoods hatched in the pocketbooks of real estate developers, it is refreshing to write about one of the classic well-established neighborhoods in New York City.

In the UES, you have so many of the things you need to have a great neighborhood: good restaurants, good shopping (Bloomingdales, etc.), great museums (Museum Mile), it's close to Central Park, and while historically it has been an expensive part of the city to live in, if you move towards the northerly reaches of the 'hood, an area that used to be largely Hispanic and poor but has been gentrified in recent decades, you can find affordable rents.

I find myself going there mainly to visit the museums, but there are also some of my favorite restaurants there, like David Burke's Fishtail and the seasonal Park Avenue Winter/Spring/Summer/Autumn. I like walking up and down Lexington Avenue and Madison Avenue for some of the coolest (and most expensive) shops in the city - mom and pop jewelry and paper stores, even the doll hospital used to be there - well, at least Tender Buttons, a store that specializes in selling buttons is still there.

Lots of stores, including famous Bloomingdale's. Tons of great restaurants, some with music and dancing. Movie theaters, cafes.
You come home, relax and out again for a walk in the neighborhood.

I actually love the old buildings, la-di-da neighbourhood changing to normality as you head east. Its very peaceful, unique and a great alternate loop for sightseeing if you've run the park way too many times each weekend for years. The shops and people are normal...so people watching here isn't what it is in the villages, but that means you can relax too.
