The first time we went here it was because it was convenient and were so pleasantly surprised that we've been back and have also picked up food to take home. The food is delicious and the service delightful. The wait-staff is very friendly and generously offered us tastes of things we weren't familiar with. I also love the decor - an interesting minimalist but not cold white tile. Also, it isn't NOISY. What a pleasure to have an adult conversation and to be able to enjoy the food.

We actually found this place while roaming around Manhattan because my husband had his period for falafal. We typed "falafal" into google maps and then used trip-advisor to see how everything was rated. We decided to walk to Naya because it had great reviews. We were not disappointed when we found it! The atmosphere is completely unique, very cool. We got there around 1:30pm on a Monday and realized that we were there during their lunch special hours, which included a full-sized gourmet sandwich (we both got the falafal wrap), and a choice of 3 mini versions of any of the appetizers on the menu. The portion sizes of the "mini" appetizers were huge and came with a heaping basket of fresh hot pita bread! We honestly could have had lunch just from the appetizers. Then the wraps came, and we were blown away by the freshness. The falafal was free of the over-fried, greasy texture that amateurs and crappy street vendors try to sell, and had a lovely green color from all the fresh herbs inside of it. There were fresh tomatoes and pickled beets inside, which we happen to LOVE. On the side was a generous portion of fresh cabbage salad, which was light, crisp and refreshing. It was only about $13 a person and we were full for HOURS afterward!

In almost three decades of living in NYC, I've seen many Lebanese restaurants open and close. Some were honestly good, others were below average. Some other restaurants, often claiming different cultural or national flagships, may try to sell you the quintessential "Middle Eastern mezze" (assortment of small meat and vegetarian dishes), but none have come close to that excellent taste, superb presentation and high quality - the trifecta - that so well exemplifies genuine Lebanese cuisine.

While Naya's menu is full of tasty delights that I urge you to try, the key "test dishes" of a good Lebanese restaurant... for taste and consistency... its hummus, shawarma, and taboule... would have you think you are eating in a restaurant in downtown Beirut, or even better, at some one's grandmother's house. The hummus is smooth without an overbearing tahini (sesame paste) after taste, the high quality meat of the shawarma (red meat or chicken) has been marinated and cooked to perfection in its aroma of 7 spices, and the taboule champions the freshest of green ingredients, obviously chopped just on the spot when your order was received, without the excess of burgul (cracked wheat) so commonly encountered in badly copied recipes. I ought to mention as well, Naya's signature dish in my wife's opinion, the "batata harra" - spicy potatoes - crunchy, roasted with garlic, fresh coriander, hot pepper, and drizzled with lemon juice. But we've yet to wrestle from the head waiter, despite our various cajoling efforts, the extra ingredient that makes this dish so particularly delicious at Naya.

The desserts are a dream... and if like me, you don't have a sweet tooth, I would still suggest trying the homemade ice cream to expand your cultural horizons. You will quickly forget the fancy sorbets and label frozen yogurts, once you've taken your first bite of this "stretchy" ice cream laced with "mesk", "mastika" or gum Arabic.

All this culinary experience occurs in a neat, modern, well designed, yet small space (do make a reservation!), that has well avoided any of the standard folkloric trappings. Not to mention a very reasonably priced menu, considering the quality, and a most friendly and welcoming staff...
