“Outstanding Phantom Housekeeping Staff”
Reviewed October 25, 2013

Quite incredibly, the bathrooms were SPOTLESS every time I used one. It was as if there were housekeeping fairies that would come along right after use, clean them and then mysteriously disappear. Not a drop of water on the sink, Not a hair in the bath. Quite remarkable. One time both the bathrooms on our floor were in use when we wanted to use them. We just went down to the next floor for a quick use of the facilities. We were fortunate to be in a room that had no street noise. The air conditioner was loud but I like that. The room was cool and comfortable. Housekeeping every day and new towels and washclothes. Located close to the Subway. Great Deli on corner of 31st and Lexington where you can grab some food to go with good prices. Guy and Guillard's on 31st and Park: great coffee and reasonable meals. Don't bother going East to 3rd Avenue...it's a dump over there. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in The City unless I hit the Lotto.

Room Tip: Room 509 was quiet with air conditioner running. That's the west SIDE. Facing the view of Empire...

My wife and I stayed at Hotel 31 and found it to be clean, exceptionally well located, and inexpensive compared to other choices. The shared bathroom proved to be no problem as the staff keeps the facilities very clean and we never had to wait to use it. One must be realistic, though, our room was small and the hotel is an older one. You won't get the extras you get (and pay for) at a luxury hotel. Our attitude is that we don't travel for sleep and staying at a place like Hotel 31 allows us to use our money for dining and entertainment. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone with that mindset. We would stay there again. Probably will.

I liked every thing about this little place!
I had to share a bathroom, but it was always impeccably clean and available. The room was so tiny (but I knew that in advance) but completely functional and with a view of the Empire State (specially beautiful at night, if you request the 8th floor B side). The manager, Mr. Sohad will help you with anything.

The subway is right around the corner, the area is trendy, safe and close to literally everything!
I had no bad experiences what so ever... I even loved the vintage tiny elevator.

PS Don't pay attention to the decor pictures in some posts, the hotel is fully refurbished and mega clean.

Room Tip: High floor rooms are quieter and with views of the Empire State Building.

This hotel cost less than half, compared to the other option we were looking at, so I booked with some trepidation, but was definitely pleased with our choice. Yes, you get what you pay for, so don't expect a palace, but the rooms were good enough for a decent night's sleep, the shared showers were cleaned several times a day, and we never had to wait to use them (2 in our floor), the wifi was free and the location excellent. We didn't spend a lot of time in, so the hotel itself did not figure highly in the experience anyway.

If you want a budget place to sleep that is well maintained and fantastically located, this one's for you. If, instead, you are looking for a great experience with satin sheets and an upmarket feel, then this isn't. Judged at the category that it is, this hotel did a fine job, and I'd definitely book it again.

I stayed 7 nights in this hotel, in the heart of Manhattan, for a very decent price.
Rooms are cleaned everyday.
Bathrooms are shared, but I had to wait only once, and they were cleaned several times a day.
Room is small, but you're not going to NY to spend time in your hotel room, are you ? ;)
The little bonus is the old style elevator (even if it was out of order for coule of hours, which was a bit painful :p).

In a fabulous location, three blocks form the Empire State building and a couple of blocks to a subway station. Very easy to get everywhere from here and we caught the subway from JFK when arriving. Room had all of the facilities needed, hair-dryer, sink, TV and was in good condition with a lovely comfy bed and it was quiet so we got good sleep. Funky décor and a sublime old lift. No problems with the shared bathrooms which were spotless and cleaned as soon as someone used them. Staff were friendly and informative. Good hotel for New York City and reasonably priced. We would stop there again.
