We stayed in Hotel 31 for 6 nights on a return visit to NYC. Again we booked a single room (sleeps 2) with a shared bathroom. This time we booked from the hotel's website - the rates were actually cheaper here than on booking.com so look before booking!
The room we were given looked as though it had been renovated (newer than the one last year), and the old wool blankets had been swapped over for fleece? polyfiber? which is probably more hygenic. The heating was a little overdone as per the last time, but we could sleep with our window open/ aircon fan switched on and so it was not a problem. The room was larger than we were expecting (larger than our other single; might be the layout), and near the loo (not next to it, nor in the corridor from the lift, which is good as those rooms look like they would be small and noisier). Room was beautifully clean, and the bathrooms were spotless as well. Decent wifi signal on the 3rd floor. Comfortable mattress and pillows. The hotel was fully booked out part of the time we were there, but we had never any problems with noise, or with getting to use a clean bathroom.
*Note on room size: We are used to travelling in Europe where hotel rooms are on the smaller side. When we stayed in SF, our hotel room was larger than this, and the hotel room in Orlando was enormous, so by American standards the rooms would probably be considered small. For Western Europe travellers, this would probably be a decent room size. Also, remember I have the cheapest room in the hotel!
Reception staff are friendly - not sure why some people complain about the service, as I found them very pleasant every time I saw them. When I rang about shopping online with delivery to the hotel, they said it would be okay - but for both politeness and confirmation, I would ring to confirm this before you do so, as you wouldn't have a room number at the time of shopping.
Location - obviously we think the location is fine as we returned here. From JFK, take the E from Jamaica Centre to Lex/53rd and then the 6 downtown to 33rd (less than an hour if you manage to catch all your connections). Yes, you would probably have to take the subway to most places, but then again the weekly subway card costs $29! And with a little study of the subway map, you could catch express trains to shorten your journey. You could walk to various tourist attractions, but in winter, I don't particularly want to. While we have never eaten anywhere near the hotel ourselves, there are a number of diners/ cafes/ restaurants nearby (check tripadvisor).
Would recommend Hotel 31 to budget travellers or anyone who doesn't want to spend a lot of money on a hotel room!
