“NYC 1st timer”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

Though the New Yorker was undergoing renovations during our stay in March of 2014, you would have never noticed it. The room was small (typical for New york) but very clean and updated. We had a great view of the river, and New jersey. The Hotel is right on 34th street which puts you within walking distance to all major attractions, including the Empire state building just 2 blocks away, and times square, only few blocks. I would recommend the New Yorker to anyone for it's helpful staff, and clean rooms. Location is perfect for Any traveler whether on business (Penn station is across the street) or tourist (In the heart of the city).

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, and they should accommodate. They did for us.

Green Features: We like that the hotel chain is trying to conserve.

I stayed for 4 nights recently in April.

Pros:
Price and location are good. Complimentary Wifi.

Cons:
Check-in front desk guy was terrible! Unfriendly, sarcastic and slow. He gave us a room that he claimed to be good - on the 8th floor, fully renovated. It was a VERY NOISY room with construction in the upper level and in nearby rooms. Toilet is very small and poorly designed. Sink is very shallow and cannot hold much water without splashing out.

Overall:
Good for the price and location. Beware of some rooms and staff.

Room Tip: Do not choose level 8 rooms.

Stayed here for 5 days 22.03.14-26.03 14 with my 20 year old daughter. Check in was ok, staff didn't come across as over friendly and not very helpful. We didn't get told where anything was in the hotel or where to find our room! Our room was on the 21st floor, when booking I aksed for a high up floor with twin beds. Our room was not very high up so no view and we had a double bed. When I went to reception to get it sorted they told me I was going to have to pay to move to a twin room!! after 10 mins of standing and explaining the frustration I was told I could move FOC the next day and to come down and see the same member of staff as she was "on all day" This member of staff was NEVER seen again!!! When I did go down the next morning, I was told they new nothing about it! so after yet more time trying to get this sorted ... it was finally sorted by 3pm !!! ... We got moved on the same floor but a twin room. Room was ok, Bathroom was ok... shower had a mind of its own!! The cleaner decided everyday to turn the aircon on to hot, so when we got in every day it was like sitting in a sauna !! the maid took it upon herself to take two things from our room ... 1) My hair wax 2) A shower cap (from their hotel!!!!) Needless to say that after this little incident EVERYTHING was locked away.
The noise from the other residents was shocking, on one occasion I had to shout at them to keep the noise down!!! Doors banging all night. Noise from people in the room next door having a conversation was unreal.. There is some noise from outside but this is to be expected in a city, it was the internal noise that was worse !!!

Overall rating
Hotel 6/10 have stayed in nicer places for a lot less money
Staff 3/10 Staff were rude and very unwelcoming at all times
Room 6/10 Room was clean(ish) good size twin room for city hotel
Noise Level - Internal 1/10 The noise from other residents is shocking
Noise Level - External 6/10 can hear some noise from outside but your in a city its to be expected!
Location 10/10 Location is the best thing about this hotel in my books

Room Tip: Get a room very high up just for the better view and if you want a twin room make sure this is done...

The good things here are very good--huge hotel in a primo location across from Penn Station, easy access to everything important and all kinds of transportation. Nothing in the world you can't get within a block or two. Art Deco lobby is spacious and fun, lots of activity and a cool place to hang out (so long as there aren't a hundred others waiting for their rooms to be ready).

Here's hoping that since it's now a Wyndham there will be a little more attention paid to cleanliness. Rooms are basically clean, but every time I've stayed here there's been one issue they just can't seem to get right--there's always a huge build up of dust on the top of the tiles in the shower. All it would take to fix this probably is running a rag over it maybe twice a year!

Rooms vary!! Most are decent sized, and I started out in one of those, but with construction right outside the window and planning to be in the hotel for five nights, I requested a change after one night. I got moved to the quiet side of the hotel and into a room that was maybe twice the size of the first one and with a decorative fireplace. So, quite an improvement. Front desk staff was quite helpful in this ordeal. Mostly in this hotel I've found that if you're nice to them they treat you well, but they don't go out of their way to be nice to you first!

Prices are quite reasonable, and basic internet is free, as it should be. The Tic Toc diner is still mediocre--the Stage Deli and the Starlight Diner, both far superior, are within a block.

Room Tip: Ask for the 20th floor and you can use either of the two elevator banks!

This is a great hotel. The sort of place I would hope to stay in New York. The rooms are fairly small, and with children it's a struggle as there are only two beds, but for a couple of nights of sight seeing this is great.

No mini bar, no tea or coffees in room, but a great big TV, fantastic views, iron, hair dryer....

Just back from a 4 night stay at the New Yorker and both my sister and I were impressed with the hotel and our room.
We had a room on the 23rd floor with distant views of the Chrysler Building. The bed was super comfy (best night's sleep for years) and the room was big enough to spread out in. The bathroom could do with a bit of tlc but was clean enough.
The location was ideal, you'd be hard pushed to find somewhere else as centrally located for the price. Traffic noise was not an issue, no more than a noise in the distance. The only noise we really were aware of was from the bathrooms of the rooms on either side but that was minimal.
We ate in the Tick Tock Diner twice, once for dinner and once for breakfast. Food was of good quality and about average for NYC. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: The room we had on the 23rd floor was large and quiet - 2360
