“Very nice ...”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We stayed at the New Yorker in early November 2013. The hotel was very busy as it was the weekend of the NYC Marathon. I found the property to be very nice. It is not the most modern of hotels, but has loads of charm. The lobby area is wonderful. The hotel staff was very helpful, although I did have minor communication issues with the front desk personnel, who appeared to be mostly non-native english speaking. The room was spacious by NYC standards. Loved the Tick Tock Diner. Will definitely book again, particularly when proximity to Penn Station is a necessity.

Stayed for 4th of July week. Staff were lovely, very helpful!
Special mention to the staff in the adjoining 'Tik Tok Diner,' quick and efficient, and absolutely nothing was a bother!
Would definitely return here!

Upon check in and through request for a larger room Angel gave us a really great room on level 36 overlooking the Hudson. ...we did not expect such a large room in New York but it was very comfortable for the four nights.

The location is very convenient and we walked to Times Square.

The rooms were nicely done up and was nice clean and very comfortable. Ray at the front door should be mentioned for his small intro to NYC after bringing our bags to the room. First impressions do count and Ray and Angel did it for me.

Stayed here for 6 nights the first week of November on Honeymoon.
The Good:
Location: such a handy location, walking distance to Times Square and the Empire State Building.
Tick Tock Diner: great food, friendly staff.

The Bad:
Tiny room; two "queen size" beds but these definitely were not as big as the double we have at home. We could both fit in one of the beds but only if we lay perfectly straight and not curled up. Given the size of the room, one bed would have been better and room set aside for something else. As it was, the wardrobe was so small only one suitcase would fit in it, leaving the other case lying out in the corner of the room for the whole time. No tea/coffee making facility.
Tiny, tiny bathroom: the bathroom was the smallest bathroom I've ever seen. The toilet is right beside the sink which is right beside the bath. There is a thin shelf above the sink but barely room for anything to be kept there without fear of it falling/being knocked into the toilet. The shower head could be used as a form of torture as it is so old, the water just comes out in a gush.
Noise: On the 19th floor, street noise was as loud as if the window was open, not the hotels fault but given the cold near the window, I doubt it was double glazed. The walls were also thin, you could hear TV on in neighbouring rooms and in the mornings the housekeeping staff could be heard loudly even though most rooms on our corridor had do not disturb signs out.
Staff: On check-in we were barely welcomed before the guy (too stunned to catch his name) demanded a credit card that was going to be pre-authorised for $70 PER DAY of our stay. Based on other reviews we are keeping a close eye to ensure that this money is released back to us. Check out was fine but we did have to pay $2 per bag that we wanted stored until our lift to the airport. This seems ridiculous, the only hotel I have ever stayed in that charged for this facility. The concierge staff were mostly helpful except for one (again didn't catch a name, Asian male) who was completely unhelpful. Pretty much shrugged his shoulders and told us to go to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and ask there.
Cooper's Tavern: Staff didn't approach tables so most customers ended up ordering their own drinks at the bar. Server asked if I wanted change, cheek, then this same server yelled at a couple leaving the bar "hey, you guys, have you paid?". They said they had but the server walked off to the other end of the bar without saying anything else to them.

The location really is the only saving point from making this a Terrible, not somewhere I would reccommend to anyone travelling to NYC.

We unfortunately arrived later in the afternoon and only managed to get an extremely small corner room. I'm talking small even by NY standarts. We had barely any space to walk around the room.

The hall ways are run down, the windows poorly fit and barely keep the heat inside the room. Our room was either always too warm (since we had the heater on to compensate for the cold coming in) or too cold (since the cold air would come in through all places). We even had to ask their service to tape one of the bathroom windows. Needless to say, we were on the 20th floor and still needed earplugs to be able to sleep.

The shower is also either too cold or too warm and very sparce. There's barely any space to put stuff down in the bathroom.

There is no room service.

Whoever rated this as a 4* hotel must've been very limited by his prior experience.

Pricing is very reasonable for the location, but I'll rather end up paying the $10 a night for a more modern hotel that allows me to sleep in a warm bed without having to run the AC at full heat.
