“Needs a complete renovation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013

My family and I are staying here as we renovate our NYC apartment. As I have said before in my reviews, I have travelled a lot. While I love luxury, I can do without quite easily. The Marmara is very good in may respects. Lots of light. Great views (lots of buildings, this is NY). The service is very good and helpful. Our three bedroom accomodates 6 of us perfectly.
My problem is with the facility. It is very worn and outdated. Sure, the furniture is modern, but it has seen better days: dings, stains, fraying. The bathrooms are very small and cheaply done (this is a step below IKEA). Same for the mini kitchen. The floor landing hallways are very dark and from another era. Ditto the terrible elevators. I can't imagine what they were thinking when the lobby was "designed." Pastic grass on the walls? I kid you not.
The dryer, microwave and 2 lamps were broken on arrival.
Finally, The Marmara sits on top of the Second Avenue subway construction. Lots of noise, difficult negotiating 94th Street and the Avenue. Not to mention, Second Avenue is grim. Not a great starting point for a day and not a good launching pad for tourists.
One can only hope the neighborhood improves for the best with the completion of the new subway (2016, they say) and that the Marmara starts renovating, floor by floor, immediately (and thinks quality both here and for their next project further West).

Room Tip: As high up as you can go.

Stayed in NYC for 4 nights, all of them at the Marmara. Good location provided you want to be out of the chaos. Short walk away from the subway to get you back into the chaos. Our one bed apartment was clean and spacious and had everything you would expect in terms of appliances and amenities with an amazing view of the city too. The only downside was the roadworks going on outside the hotel. But we couldn't hear it from our high room and it's beyond the Maramaras control so they can't really be held responsible.

What a great way to put it, just “out of the chaos”, yet minutes away from the NYC we love. Thank you for you stellar feedback, it was a great pleasure to be your hosts.

Stayed at the Maramara this past weekend for our trip to NYC! We sent our request to not be on the ground floor and we requested a Balcony! We got everything we asked for! I slept on a soft top mattress! We had a One-Bedroom Suite, which happen to be thee quietist Hotel room I have ever stayed at! We had free Wi-Fi and also access to the computer with printer in the lobby, so I was able to print my boarding passes! There was a 24hr market across the street in case we needed to make any purchases! I would recommend this Hotel to Everyone!

Stayed at The Marmara at the end of August/beginning of September with my family. We had booked a one bedroom room with sofabed. As requested we were given a room on a high floor and the view was excellent. We also had a small balcony(not the faint-hearted!)...The room and living room was spacious enough for our family of 4 and the small kitchen more than adequate.

The dustbin in the kitchen was far too small and i found i had to empty it almost daily. There was a rubbish shute outside our room but wasn't told about this until i complained about our build up of rubbish on the 2nd day!

On the 2nd day,our dish washer was found to be faulty and actually leaked after a wash! However it was promptly replaced the same day.
A/c unit wasn't easy to set....sometimes it would get too cold......

Housekeeping only occured once on our 7 night stay, thereafter there is a charge...

The 'gym' is very small but adequate!...Only 3/4 pieces of equipment....only one treadmill...The hotel would be great with a small pool. There wasn't anything for my kids to do,once we got back to the room!

We frequented the local supermarket almost daily and it was convenient for all our needs. The subway was about a 10min walk and there were numerous buses.

However, all in all we had a brilliant stay and would definitely stay again....

Thankyou to Emily who was very helpful with directions/maps.....

Room Tip: Request high floor

We are so pleased you had a “brilliant” stay with us here on the Upper East Side, enjoying the location and the apartment style suite. It is disturbing you were in need of our maintenance team during your stay, but exceedingly happy they were quickly able to resolve any issue. It was fantastic you were able to take advantage and customize your booking to include once weekly housekeeping, what a great value! It is great you stayed with us and even greater still your promise to return, thank you.

We booked this hotel through an agency, specifically asking for an apartment with a separate bedroom. When we arrived I was a bit disappointed with the first room, which was not as glamorous looking as the web site. The reception desk were great and quickly moved us to a fabulous apartment on the corner of the 9th floor. We had amazing views over the city, loads of space and a very well equipped kitchen. I presume the apartments are also let longer term because there was loads of storage space.

There is a gym and washing machines/dryers in the basement.

The location is great, maybe not 2nd Ave so much but a very short walk away to Lexington and of course near to Central Park.

The downside is the noise as a new subway station is installed, seemingly under the hotel. The first night I couldn't believe how noisy it was, but by the second night I didn't notice.

Staff were relaxed, friendly and very helpful. The room and hotel were clean but the daily cleaning was a bit random. The towels, dishes and sheets were always done but nothing else seemed to be moved or if they were it varied from day to day.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room first. Bear in mind the roadworks are noisy, presumably this has less impact the...

It is always a thrill to take “a bit disappointed” to “FABULOUS APARTMENT" & AMAZING VIEWS! Thank you for allowing us that honor. Thank you as well for pointing out that although 2nd Ave. may be a bit noisy while we await our own Subway, it is not constant but fleeting, while Central Park will remain as always just the other side of Lexington Ave. Thank you for your gracious feedback, we look forward to your return.

Stayed with my sister from Australia from 19 - 24 September. First time in NY. Had a one bedroom apartment on 9th floor. Apartment was spacious, clean and well equipped for a short stay, full size cooker, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster. Coffee maker faulty - replaced within 10 mins, kettle leaked - replaced straight away. Free internet access in lobby. Good location - local shops, restaurants, bus and subway. On a busy main road - quite a bit of traffic noise at night - but hey ho it is New York after all.
Now to the staff and service which was second to none. Concierge Dennis and his colleagues were always on hand to help with anything - loads of advice and local knowledge. Dennis especially has a larger than life personality and has many a tale to tell - the staff in these apartments very welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Check in and out really quick and efficient.
Reception has a list of local restaurants and will make bookings or get menus for take outs.
The only downside was that the pull out sofa bed in the apartment was very very uncomfortable - mattress thin and springs felt. I mentioned this when I checked out and Dennis said they would have provided another mattress if I had mentioned sooner. This bed is probably ok for young children for a couple of nights but not really up to the job for adults for 5 nights. That was the only downside.
Overall a very enjoyable stay -

Room Tip: Check out comfort of sofa bed and let them know early if it is not ok.

It was such a joy to have you and your sister stay with us for your first trip to New York. It was an extreme pleasure to view the city again through your fresh eyes and ears (hey ho!), so honored you were with us here at the Marmara.
You have set the bar very high for our continued success having bestowed the title of “second to none” and “Beyond expectation” upon us.
Looking forward to your second trip to New York where we will have the opportunity to raise that bar!

Stayed 4th - 18th September 2013. The one bedroom apartment was brilliant. We had asked for a high floor and they gave us the 30th (out of 32) so that was a good start. The view was fantastic. The amenities superb. Comfortable bed, adequate kitchen and comfortable lounge furniture. The staff from maids to front desk were helpful, courteous and patient even when we asked stupid questions. The Lobby had a number of computers and printers for guests to use. We had our own laptop and iPad but needed to use the Lobby ones when printing off return flight boarding passes and tickets for places like the Empire State and the 911 memorial. Having the tickets prior to getting to the places does give you an advantage with queues. Local restaurants, especially Nicks, and food shopping were excellent. The laundry area was OK and there was also a gym in the basement which we did not avail ourselves but it looked substantial. Any criticisms? The TV station selection could have had more stations and the fact that we had to reconnect/log in to the free Wi-Fi at least twice a day instead of just once at the beginning of the holiday. But they were minor things compared the excellent other things. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Do not be put off by the construction work going on outside for the new Subway line. You do not hear...
