we stayed in this hostel for 9 nights. My friend and I were in a 12 beds room, so it was a little noisy but ok!
what i like the most was the kitchen! it's modern and very practical and clean. The staff is nice and really helpful!
what i dislikes was the sanitary! the showers were dirty, even the washbowls with hair and water everywhere. but the hostel is in renovation so it should be better next time!
about the location, there are lot's of market, restaurant, and shop around. The subway is only 5 minutes walk. Central Park is at about 10 min from the hostel.

I think any big hostel in any big city has quite a job on their hands to please everyone and keep the hostel running to a good standard - I thought the HI hostel on 103rd street in NYC was great, its a huge old building, well kept with out door space - its not the best neighbourhood but its ok and I never felt unsafe while walking to and from the hostel - the hostel are in the middle of some reception renovations and their bathroom renovations are still to come but the canteen area/internet area and lounge are good (Could be a little bit bigger for such a big hostel perhaps?) - I was in an 8 bed mixed dorm - I had asked to be in all female but they said as they were full was this ok - I was a bit put off but I was in a really nice 8 bed - everyone was really nice in there - There are lockers in the rooms (so remember your padlocks) and there are bigger lockers in the basement so you can keep big bags there if you want to - $5 for 24 hrs. I didnt go to the kitchen but was told it was amazing and newly renovated - The only draw back was the bathrooms which were always water logged and steaming, plus did occasionally have to queue for showers - but renovations are coming so hopefully that will all be a thing of the past - Its a good choice for a hostel, only one street from the no1 red line subway - staff were helpful and polite and all in all - I stayed 3 nights and I had a great time in NYC and the hostel was a great base - recommend it! - Enjoy!

Firstly this hostel is massive, and is mixed with school groups, old and young and families. Firstly, there were some school groups who were staying there the same time as us and they were so noisy!! They would be up all night and then up super early in the morning which was very annoying. There was also this one girl in my room who was so inconsiderate and noisy - but hey, i suppose thats just another part of hostelling. This hostel didnt really have many parties as there is a 'family friendly no drinking policy' which is not really a big deal as new york is full of awesome bars anyway. The rooms are clean however the bathrooms are disgusting! With so many people using them they get really dirty and they are quite old. Apparently they are renovating them - they do need it! The kitchen facilities there were great however it can get a little busy at times. New york is so expensive so this is probably one of the best hostels around that is reasonable and in a good area.

Costing around $30 per night, the hostel provided big bedrooms with plenty of space and lockers in the bedroom big enough for a very large travel case. Friendly staff and tourist advisors kindly welcome you whilst providing you with plenty of help, advice and city information (including a map and discounts!). The bathrooms were large and always clean, Generally the place was immaculate. There is a small dining room and I was given vouchers for a free contintntal breakfast and tea/coffee. There is also a large computer room with around 15 computers with internet access and a printer. There is also a large TV room (with wi-fi I think), however I didn't spend much in there.
All in all, this is the place to stay in NYC!

Being a 65 year old woman I was leery about staying in a youth hostel. Took my Girl Scouts (15-17 years old) to NYC and we stayed here. I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone who worked here was real polite and helpful. Rooms were decent, with good sturdy lockers to place our luggage; bathrooms were clean and in need of remodeling-which I understand they are doing now. Kitchen is fabulous. Large refrigerators-stoves-sinks-utensils-and tables to eat at. Close enough to subway-probably 3-4 blocks. 24 hour grocery nearby and a McDonalds. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone but especially groups who can have a room to themselves. Also, I would like to thank Mayra for answering all my nervous e-mails.
