Stayed here for two nights as part of an organised tour in December 2013.
We arrived during mid-afternoon - there isn't a huge amount of space to stop outside the hostel so we ended up double parking and heading in. Our rooms weren't ready, so we left our luggage in the storage room and headed out to Central Park (about a 10 mins walk away). When we came back, we headed up to our room - there's one lift for the whole building, so you might need to wait at times. We had a room on the 2nd floor (3rd if you're American) for 6 of our group.
The room had 3 bunk-beds, which were relatively new and didn't creak too much. There were lockers, which wouldn't fit a suitcase or large rucksack, but were big enough for small backpacks. The bed linen was clean, as was the room itself and the beds were comfortable. There was a massive heater / air con unit by the window - it was pretty noisy, so we found it was best to whack it on high for a while, then switch it off. We didn't hear much noise from other rooms and I slept well.
There were 2 men's bathrooms on our floor - one just had toilets and sinks in it, the other had showers as well. The shower cubicles were a good size - there was space to hang up your clothes so that they didn't get wet and the water pressure was good, with plenty of hot water.
Downstairs, there's a lobby with a security door, which is good. There's no breakfast at this hostel, but there's an awesome cafe - it's got pastries, baguettes, juices, fruits, soft drinks and teas & coffees and is open nearly all hours, so you won't starve - if you do miss it, there are vending machines (and hey, it's NYC, there'll be something open!). There's a pool table and some sofas and downstairs, more sofas and a projector screen (they showed films one night).
The wifi had good range and the speed was good. Location-wise, it's about 2-3 mins walk to 103rd St subway station (Line 1), or about 5-8 mins walk to 103 St subway station for Lines A, B or C - both stations are local ones.
Overall, this was a nice hostel - it's not in the best location, but for the price, it's pretty easy to get to where you want to go.
