“I`ll be back”
Reviewed November 22, 2007

As good as you would expect from a Hostel! It was perfect for me and I`ll go back.

The 4-bed room was clean, comfortable, relatively spacious & quiet. There were big lockers (bring your own lock) & a reading lamp for each bed. Linens (sheets & towel) included. Pre-checkin/post-checkout luggage storage in basement for $5.

The washrooms were as clean as you can expect when used by so many people. They are cleaned daily. There was a short wait in the morning during peak times. I took 2 showers during my stay: one cold, one hot.

Cafe has pretty good bagels (breakfast included one morning/not the next). Internet, gift shop & tourist info on site.

One block away from the subway & central park.

And all for $40, can`t complain!

This was my first hostel experience and was apprehensive about it.
The staff in the lobby were very friendly during my entire stay, and were always willing to help if I had any questions.

The first night the room was damp and smelled, and the beds squeaked quite loudly whenever someone would shift or roll over. The others in the room were not very considerate during the night while others were attempting to sleep. Some would get up to go to the bathroom and allow the door to slam behind them, and would not try to be quiet as they were getting into the metal lockers in the room. I spoke to the front desk about this, and although they said it was rare that they'd reassign rooms they did allow me to change.

The second room I stayed in for 3 additional nights. This room was much larger (both rooms had 5 bunk beds for a total of 10 people), seemed cleaner, didn't smell, and the other guys in the room were friendly and quiet at night. The beds in this room also seemed to be newer, and didn't squeak at all.

The hostel is undergoing renovation, both on the outside and inside. One wing was actually closed off as they replaced the carpet, painted the walls, and I assume put in new beds like the ones in my second room. I don't know if it'd do much good, but I'd definitely request a 'newly renovated room' when making your reservation.

The location is not very bad at all. The area seemed safe and the hostel was only 1 block from a 103rd street subway stop. The #1 train stops in this station, and is only about 7 stops from Times Square (15 minutes).

If you wanted to get to the bottom of Manhattan more quickly, you could walk to the 96th street station and take the #2 express train which stops at fewer stations.

They had a very nice kitchen in the basement, but I didn't find it until the last day so I didn't use it. Everything was quiet modern and I think it would have been fun to cook there with my friend.

Along with the lockers in your room (bring your own padlock for those), there are much larger lockers in the basement. These are on an electronic lock/payment system and you can store stuff there before or after you check out. For the largest locker it was $5/day and big enough for a few soft sided suitcases.

Recently had the chance to spend 4 days in NYC on short notice and the HI hostel seemed like a great way to do it cheaply. Call well ahead - I made reservations two weeks ahead and all they had left were 12 bed dorms.

First, the good news:

- where else can you get three nights in a safe, bug-free bed in Manhattan for $120?
- good security, felt very safe coming/going and in the hostel.
- large lockers beside each bed.
- friendly staff.
- despite its 600+ bed size, not overrun with school groups when I was there - the common room and garden looked like places where a solo traveller could meet others.
- Mostly people in their 20s but lots of other age groups represented, too, including retirees.
- only a block from the subway, with a Starbucks and bagel shop right nearby for breakfast.
- lots of activities (I didn't go on any but there were 4-6 things to choose from daily, including evening events, which would probably also be a great way to meet people.)
- not a party hostel (this was a plus for me).
- a gorgeous new kitchen in the basement.
- individual dorm rooms very clean.

Now the bad news:

- the bathrooms were in atrocious condition all four days I was there. Not dirty, just very unkept. Standing water all over the floors and counters, bins overflowing, hair in the sink, running out of paper towels, grubby showers that were sometimes okay and sometimes ran hot/cold. The bathrooms were very crowded in the morning.

- The common areas (with the exception of dorms and kitchen) had a generalized air of grubbiness - peeling paint, a creaky elevator that took forever, worn carpets and chairs, air conditioner in the dorm room rattled so loudly it was difficult to sleep.

HI hostels have a reputation for being safe, spotlessly clean, and devoid of character. You know what you're going to get. People who are accustomed to the pristine HI hostels of Europe will be disappointed with the cleanliness of HI New York. This should be the best hostel in North America. I hope the ongoing renovations make the whole place look as beautiful as the new kitchen, and they fix whatever ongoing problems they're having with cleaning staff.

My first Hostel, not bad. I was looking for a cheap sleep and shower without getting bugs or my stuff stolen or me robbed.
I was not disappointed.

I didn't sleep much, not sure if it was that I was still occupied with my travels or the flushing of the toilet in the bathroom in the next room. I must have been the location of the bed.

Sheets, bed, pillow and towel all provided and clean. Showered and went to bed. Was up first thing and on my way. Well worth $32. Bring your own lock for the locker. I would suggest slippers for the walk to and from the shower to the room. Each room has its own key access.

I only had two others show up in the room from 1230 til 6. for a romm that would sleep 6.

I will be back in the future, when it serves the purpose. Would be excellent for the younger crowd. Looked to be alot of activites to be had with trips etc.....

well the hostel itself is an ok place to stay, location is pretty good as subway is really near. lots of schoolies tho so be warned! there was a problem with some rooms, they felt and smelt damp not good, and the first night they messed our reservation up so the two of us (2 girls) stayed in a 10 bed male room, tho they did sort it out the next night.

everything was fine till the last day when my Ipod went missing. i was told one of the housemaids may have picked it up whilst cleaning as sometimes that happens. tho my bed had not been touched as they dont clean it till u leave. also what right do housemaids have to touch other peoples stuff i have no idea. It seems at that hostel a lot of expensive things go missing regulary like ipods, battery charges etc. the manager was no help at all, really rude and seemed like he couldnt be bothered that housekeeping touch guests stuff.

Apart from that all was good though the $20 a night for a 12 bed dorm, is a lil rip off, but thats NY for ya...

It was the first time I stayed at a hostel and it was better than I expected. The conditions are great, good structure, nice people although the service was not very good, the people in the front desk are very unfriendly sometimes. My overall rating is 4.
