We always stay at the Milburn when visiting New York. It seems to improve all the time and is comfortable with friendly and helpful staff who respond quickly to any request. The free breakfast offered a reasonable spread and as much as I wanted to eat. The free wifi was great and helped enormously with planning. The position is excellent with lots of restaurants and super shops like Zabars, Fairway and Citarella whose products we were able to enjoy thanks to the kitchenette with fridge. The area is very pleasant with good transport links and Central Park a short walk away, all much pleasanter than noisy, dirty, frenetic downtown.

We recently stayed a week in the Milburn, in an unrenovated double/double room on the 10th floor. The hotel is in a great location - easily accessible from the 79 and 72 st subways (72 is particularly useful to catch the express trains downtown, which saves a lot of time). It's also close to the M79 bus across central park which was perfect to access the museums on 5th Avenue. It's a pleasant walk to central park as well. There is both a Fairways and Zabars market close by (these may be expensive for locals but compared with eating out the pre-prepared meals are affordable and very good!). The neighbourhood is lovely - miles away in distance and spirit from noisy, dirty, frantic midtown but with enough local shops and restaurants and liveliness.
As for the hotel itself, it had all we needed - the rooms are decorated in a very traditional manner (if a little hot and stuffy, even without heating, Opening the windows solved that). Even with the windows open it was quiet (our room faced the back of the hotel) and we didn't hear other guests or banging doors or anything like that. Just the occasional siren. The bed was actually much comfier than mine at home. The kitchenette is sparse but functional (bring your own sharp knife and microwave dish if you plan to eat in). The bathroom may be considered small by some but it does have a bath (wonderful for soaking aching feet) and endless hot water.
The hotel has really good free wifi which made a big difference to me (I could always get on with good reception and download my google maps for the day). They also have a computer room with internet access and a printer, which was handy for printing out tickets etc.
The free breakfast was simple but good enough for us - various bagels, cereals, yoghurt, tea/coffee and fruit. It can get a bit crowded but they are happy for you to take food back to your room. And we found going down earlier than 7.30 or after 8ish we could usually get a table.

The service is what made this place "average" rather than "very good" - the staff I encountered were responsive to needs, but not the most friendly. In fact, they are quite impassive and either ignore you or stare rudely. The only exception to this was the guy staffing the breakfast room, who was lovely.
But all in all, I don't really need "friendly" and for the price this place was perfect for us.

Room Tip: Stretch to a suite if you can afford it, I had trouble sleeping from jet lag and it would be nice to...

I spent 12 nights at this hotel. I booked a studio for my daughter and my sister (who arrived later than me). The studio was perfect for two, but little for 3 persons, as there was no room enough to add a third bed. I explained the situation at the front desk, and they changed us into a suite, for a little more expensive rate. Both rooms have kitchenette, which is a plus, considering that restaurants in NYC are very expensive. There are good markets nearby to buy pre-cooked meals to eat at the hotel. The bathrooms were good, not many amenities in them. Cleanless was ok. Both rooms were quiet. Location is great, 3 blocks from subway, in a residential neibourghood. Many restaurants and stores are located around.
This hotel offers breakfast included in the rate (not usual in NYC).
Other plus: there is a self service laundry in the basement, free wi fi in the rooms and in the lobby although the conection wasn´t very good. I'll recommend this hotel, and I'll return to it, excellent relationship between price and service.

Room Tip: rooms 1105 and 607 was not noisy at all

Great hotel and would go back/refer others. Friendly service, comfortable room, good mattress. Large lobby, and a PARLOR!!! Dated decor, but not at all shabby. Sparkly clean kitchenette and bath. Large rooms for NYC! Asked for quiet room and mine was on 2nd floor overlooking a roof. Not scenic, but quiet, and that was fine! Service was friendly, quick, and effective, e.g., TV and bed lamps needed service. Just around corner from Broadway and a Fairway store with everything! Continental breakfast included - great bagels, etc. Generous with food. Free use of internet in lobby. In quiet, upscale "uptown" neighborhood. Only "negative" - room doors slam loudly.

Room Tip: Mine was 204 - a queen standard. Saw suites which were spacious. Variety of layouts.

In October 2012 we stayed with our extended family at the Milburn, renting three one-bedroom suites for several days. We hoped to return, because having the extra space for children was very nice, but they were so unpleasant when we tried to work with them around an unavoidable cancellation that we will not stay there again. When we had to cancel beyond the THREE DAY cancellation policy, we asked if we could credit that charge toward our next stay, already booked. They said it might be possible, but not on sold-out or blacked-out days, and then it turned out that every day we chose--we had booked three nights--was "sold out" though there were rooms of every type available on the web. The agent screamed at my son on the phone, and they weren't the least bit concerned with trying to make it work. Pay attention to the three-day policy, which can be difficult with the vagaries of young children, and know ahead of time that they will be completely unsympathetic if you have to cancel.

Stayed four nights. This is a delightful hotel with an old worldly and lovely atmosphere. The staff were all helpful. If you are wanting to explore the Upper West Side, then the location is ideal. Nearby is a good Italian/pizza restaurant and only a few blocks away is Amsterdam Avenue with heaps of bars and restaurants.

The room was a good size with a small kitchenette. Bathroom small but no big hassle. Internet service was fine and the room had a good sized safe box.

Would definitely stay again.

Very good value for money in New York. The hotel is almost a four star hotel. Friendly, helpful staff and very clean rooms. You can walk from the hotel through Central Park and you are in 15 minutes at fifth avenue. Good little restaurants near the hotel and good shopping Loehmanns for clothes and Fairway for great food. We will certainly come back to this hotel. Forget the breakfast, but there are coffeshops and breakfast places close to the hotel.

Room Tip: Room number 1405, superior room, is worth the money.
