“Good location, average hotel”

me and another chaperone took 5 17 year old student to NYC for a week in June for Journalism workshops on Columbia. We chose this location because of it's access to the subways lines to go to Columbia or downtown to the sites. We LOVED the location of the hotel. We were 2 blocks from central park, 2 blocks from the subway and 1 block from an amazing grocery store. The area felt less touristy and more like a home to people who actually live in the city. We walked by schools and daycares, grocery stores and dr offices. This is the first time in 3 years (and 4 trips to NYC) that I have seen an area this "laid back" and residential. We were within 10 minutes from Columbia and 10 minutes from Times Square. We chose this hotel also because we could get a room that fit 5 people. One of our rooms (that I was in with the 4 girls) had 2 queen beds in the room, and a pull out sofa. My students said the beds were comfortable, but the sofa may have been some of the worst sleep I've ever had. The room wasn't cleaned thoroughly. The tub got a little grungier every day. We constantly had to call down for towels. Front desk staff wasn't overly helpful. It was nice that there was a breakfast buffet - definitly saved us money. And the price was great. Considering how little time we spent in the hotel, I wasn't too picky. If I had been able to sleep as well as my students, I have rated it higher. For the price, this hotel is worth while. But it's just an average hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid the pull out sofas!!

Myself and some friends visited New York City during Labor Day Holiday weekend and stayed at the Milburn Hotel. My travel agent took care of our reservation and recommended The Milburn after explaining to her that we wanted a budget friendly yet, nice place stay for the weekend. I love her recommendation as it was a great choice! We had a suite which nicely accommodated myself and three friends. The suite came with 2 twins and a full size sofa bed. We requested a rollaway with our travel agent who made sure our request was filled and even called while we were there to make sure. The hotel is very nice and close to Central Park and the train station that takes you right to Times Square. Getting around was a breeze literally! Also, the hotel offers FREE breakfast daily and there are kitchenettes in the rooms. SUPER PLUS.

While I really enjoyed my stay, I will admit that, the front desk, including the manager could use attitude ajustments. But after putting them in place, I had no more problems.

Over all, I would recommend this hotel if you are open to living like the locals and don't mind walking and taking public trans. While these reviews are meant to help guide us and give tips and advise, remember too, that this is based on my experience and yours could be a lot better!

Had a room with kitchenette for our ten day stay in New York. Upper West Side was a recommended and excellent choice for our stay. The mayhem of Midtown would have been too much. The hotel was very convenient and the staff were both friendly and helpful. Big pluses - close to buses and subway, a laundry service next door, short walks to Riverside and Central Parks, good markets and cafe's nearby (walk up to West 83rd and Cafe Lalo and have coffee where Meg Ryan waited for her mystery man in "You Have Mail") and a few blocks from the Lincoln Centre. Our room was also quite spacious with tasteful decor, huge comfy bed and a big TV. Minuses: It's a long way to the 14th floor when the lifts break down! Our kitchenette was not well equipped - fridge, microwave, coffee maker and the basics of crockery and cutlery but no utensils or extra bowls etc. They also give you an old-style kettle and hot plate - an electric kettle would have made more sense. There's a queue for the Continental breakfast if you want to eat around 8am and they use plastic plates, bowls and cutlery which is a bit tacky and wasteful.
Overall: We'd stay there again and the pros far outweigh the cons.

Husband and I booked a 1 bedroom suite based purely on price because our 25 yr old son was staying with us and could sleep on the sofabed in the lounge.

Room positives

Great size lounge and bedroom.
Comfy bed.
Huge flatscreen tvs in each room with lots of channels, even live Eurpean football which made my husband happy!
Furniture in both rooms was fine.
Iron,board and hairdryer.

Neither positive or negative

Smallest bathroom ever but at least there was a tub/shower combo and mirrors around the sink and toilet to create a feeling of more space.
The bathroom was only accessed through the bedroom.

Room negatives

Kitchenette consisted of a fridge, sink and microwave. There was a kettle in the cupboard but no stove or ring to heat it on ! I had read descriptions that there was cookware provided so expected a bit more of a suite kitchen and not just what you usually get in a lot of hotel bedrooms.
Although we requested an extra set of crockery/glasses etc they never materialised and the knives were so blunt we could not even cut an apple with them.
The safe was just loose on a shelf in the wardrobe and not fixed down.
Strange thing to comment on but but although the carpet and wallpaper looked OK the room looked tired because it looked as if none of the paintwork on the doors, skirting boards etc had been touched since the 60s.This made the room look grubby.

Comments

Hotel is close to a subway and taxis were plentiful and easy to get.
There are restaurants close by and more restaurants/bars within a ten minute walk up on Amsterdam and Columbus.
Also there are fantastic food markets a couple of blocks away.
We never ate breakfast in the hotel as there was always a queue so we just ate out.

We stayed here with our 3 year old daughter in September this year for 10 nights and Its a great place to base yourself for a lengthy NYC stay. It's in a great part of the upper west side with nice supermarkets around the corner and the rooms have small kitchens which is perfect when you have little ones as you don't have to eat out each night. The breakfast included at the hotel is nice enough though basic and the rooms are very spacious if you go for the superior 1 bedrooms like we did. My wife's parents stayed for 9 nights as well in a studio across the hall and that room was a great size too. Our whole family would highly recommend this place and we will be back again next year.

Room Tip: We stayed on flor 11 last year and floor 12 this year and both were great and quieter than the lower...

We enjoyed our stay in a 12th floor queen suite. Although not huge, the suite appeared to have been recently renovated: freshly painted, re-carpeted, and re-wallpapered. Rooms were clean and bright. Artificial lighting: Excellent. Flat screen TV in both the bedroom and in the living room/dining room, where there was a love seat, easy chair, coffee table, and a small dinette set. Small kitchenette alcove with microwave, coffee pot, sink, and refrigerator. A safe was located in the large walk-in closet in the bedroom. The biggest drawback was the tiny, tiny bathroom: Excluding the bath/shower, approximately 4' x 4'. Water pressure in bathroom: Good. Laundry drying cord over the tub. Mirrors on three of the walls gave the illusion that the bathroom was larger. Free WiFi. Complimentary continental breakfast was so-so. Dining room was too small for the hotel. We had to take our breakfast back to our room.

Several markets within 3-4 blocks: Trader Joe's, Fairview, Citalla (gourmet), and Zabar's (gourmet). Dry cleaners next door. Hotel was a couple of blocks from the Beacon Theater. Four blocks to the over-rated Gray's Papaya (hot dogs not as good as Nathan's) Other businesses on the walk south toward the subway include Barney's, North Face, Loehmann's and Urban Outfitters. Lincoln Center a 10 block walk away. At 79th and Amsterdam is Nice-Matin, an expensive but good French restaurant. Banks nearby. Tip: Duane Reade Drugstores have Chase ATMs.

Small clean rooms, beds and pillows a little too soft for my liking. Tiny kitchen with little crockery or cutlery in stock. Great location with lots of shopping, some theatre nearby and plenty of very good eating places. Staff friendly and helpful and good access to PC's - free half hour sessions. A good breakfast is included, it gets very busy and you might end up sharing a table with someone. Over all a good experience, but with four of us in a small space, we needed to stay out and about, which is fine because your in NYC for the experience, not the hotel room.
