stayed here for a few days annually.Very small average rooms but they work for 1 or 2 people A no frills hotel. No restaurant or coffee available but a Dunkin Donuts and Cafe Grind only 2 minute walk.Closest hotel to Javitz Center,Parking with a hotel stamp across the street 25 bucks.Don't expect much but you will be satisfied

Room Tip: upper levels more than 2 people in a room you will feel crowded

Dear stevedolphin,
Thank you for having choosen The GEM Hotel Midtown West during your recent trip to New York City. I especially like to thank you for taking the time in posting a review of your stay. Though we do not offer many other amenities we pride ourselves in the one on one guest interaction. We just recently partnered with Cafe Grind. Please mention LGEMR on your return visit. Thank you again.

We were put in the basement, and as we exited the elevator, we quickly realized we were the ONLY ROOM in the basement. Surrounding our room was the employee break room, supply closets, public restroom, and maintenance closets. We were awoken by lots of chatter and slamming at around 7am. We can only assume that was the beginning of the day shift. Our room was the size of a closet, we had to turn sideways to get into our bed. Our window view was of the garbage dumps and employee smoke break area, and had there been a fire, we had no other means of egress. In my 32 years on this planet, this was officially the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. THE WORST.

Also, this is the review I submitted, ver batim, to Hotels.com, and it was rejected. So if you book your hotels through that venue, make sure you look elsewhere for accurate reviews prior to booking.

Dear Kelly E,

We sorry to hear the your stay at the Gem Hotel Midtown West did not met up to your expectations. The room located in the lower level is quite a different room from many other hotel rooms is NYC. We are a small boutique hotel with limited employee areas, we try our very best to be aware of guest occupying this particular room. Again please accept our apologies and I hope that you will give us another opportunity. Please contact me at midtown.gm@thegemhotel.com so that I may send you something via email or regular mail for a future stay.

Again our apologies.

Sincerely,
Lawrence Hou

I booked this hotel because of reasonable price for the location. The staff was friendly and helpful. We booked a single room and it was tiny, but it is NYC so what do you expect. We just used the room to sleep and shower. The room smelled nice upon arrival and was very clean.
It was a ten minute walk to shops and the subway. I will say it was a little sketchy walking at night from the subway to the hotel, so if you don't feel safe walking alone at night just catch a cab from the subway station. Other than that it was a good overall.

Located between 9th and 10th avenue , 10 mins walk from Macy's and 15 mins from Empire State . Pleasant clean rooms and the staff are lovely . There are no public areas in this hotel it's just rooms with a lobby . There are plenty of restaraunt s close by and the skyline diner on the. Corner of 9th and 38 th st is perfect for breakfast . Okay the immediate vicinity of the hotel Is far from glitzy but a 5 min walk takes you in to the heart of Manhatten . It's great value when comparing the price of other hotels in Ny and you will not spend much time inthe hotel anyway . A recommended base for a short stay doing the sights . The desk staff are all friendly and are pleased to help and advise

Upon our arrival, very disappointed with the location. Coming from a different state, the block was scary. Not the NY Times Square glitz I was told via Hotels.com. Concierge was not friendly. Could use some customer service training. Both employees looked unhappy. We were told check in time was 12 noon when booking via phone only to find out that check in time was 3pm and check out was 12 noon. Had to leave and return at 3pm. They volunteered to keep our luggage. Requested late checkout only to be told it had to be requested in the morning keep in mind check in time is 3pm. The room was standard, lamp shade was damaged, beds and pillows were clean and comfy. The heater was touching the bed and was not consistent with the temp and made noise during the night.. Bathroom was okay with some visible mold / mildew on the wall tiles in the shower. The toilet after being flushed continued running and disturbed our sleep until we had to get up and turn it off from the bottom. TV was poor standard and remote was not working, maybe needed new batteries. wifi never worked. two bottles of water was available for 4 people. After parking across the street for $25 hotel discount, taxis were easily accessible on the corner of 10th by the BP gas station. There is also a Dunkin Donuts in the BP Gas Station shop. And a McDonalds nearby for a quick hunger fix. Taxi to Rockafeller Center was Cheap $7.50 for 4 people. Next morning the front desk female was a little friendly after we initiated a conversation with her. She could be good with the right training. Overall I would not stay there for the price. Would rather spend more $$ for the NY experience.

My friend and myself traveled here for 5 nights and loved the GEM! The location was perfect for walking to Times Square and tons of restaurants. It's a quaint hotel with an upscale feel, yet offering many of the same free amenities of your standard chain hotels. While some other reviews complain about the size of the room, this is New York, they are all on the smaller side...and you shouldn't be spending much time in the room while in NYC!! The staff was awesome, they helped out so much with directions, tips and advice. They were always welcoming every time we came back in from a long day. Kudos to them!! I would definitely stay here again on my next trip to the Big Apple!

What can I say to convince you not to? How about our fire hazard of a lamp, complete with scorch marks? Random apple in the bedside table - possibly from the last person in the room, possibly from ten people before the last person in the room. There's a safe fee of $2 per day for a safe in the room, well. Day two our safe broke, everything was in there - passport, cash, cards, jewellery. They did offer to take it away and get us a new one - WITH OUR STUFF STILL IN IT. The noisy air con. The noisy shower. The noise in general. Wi-Fi is slow and disconnects all the time. The rooms are small. The bathroom is Smaller. Wasn't expecting huge but space could have been used more wisely. Our TV didn't work for the first two days. In happier news the area is handy to Penn Station and close to Time Square but there are other hotels nearby which you'll probably enjoy more. Staff weren't that great, only the guy at check in was memorable. If I can't talk to out of it, hope you enjoy and look forward to hearing about your experience...

Dear nicbloxnz,
I first like to offer you our deepest apologies it appears that we failed in many key areas in making your stay memorable. Memorable in a positive way. But I like to just let you know that though your comments and review were negative we did hear you. We just recently upgraded our Hi speed Wi-Fi and installed new 37"LG televisions. I hope that you will give us another opportunity. Our apologizes again.
