Was there for a week during IFP (Independent Film Week) Could not have stayed at a COOLER Hotel - The Hallways are right out of Blue Velvet by David Lynch and they have Indie films on the VOD in the rooms - DJs in the Lobby and another restaurant and Bar in the front... The store sells the entire Criterion Collection of DVDs...!!! Stay here...

Room Tip: Try rooms on the inside as they are quieter...

Staying at the Ace is part of the tourist experience. It's different, and offers surprises every time. This was my third stay at the hotel, and I was greeted by a Google Chrome netbook in my room, which was mine to use (free) during my stay. It came with free wireless anywhere in the city! I have stayed in bigger and smaller rooms (all with full sized beds). Service was very good. While you're there, check out the Breslin. The only negative I have is the last time I was there the hallway smelled faintly of South Asian food the whole time I was there. As far as room noise, it really depends on where you are. The last 2 times I was there I got a corner room on the 7th and 8th floors and there was no room noise at all (despite the loud music in the lounge).

Hotel is very cool, in a grunge sort of way. Staff are all young, tattooed, wear funky little hats, etc. They are all very nice. Common amenities of a hotel are not so great. My hallway was dark and smelled a bit of stale smoke and alcohol. The room was like a college dorm room. The bathroom was small. Shower had barely enough room to stand. Gym in basement was OK.
Location was great for my needs.

Everythign you read about this place on here is true, except anything even vaguely cranky-pantsd. This hotel is wonderful. Feels cool and fun and hip, but not full of itself, rather it's comfortable, casual, and fun, adn clever touches abound. The staff are wonderful, from the darling bellmen in their cooleroo jeans and blue shirts to the lovely front desk, to Adele, the most delightful actor-posing-as-a waitress you will ever meet. The decor is cool and surprising -- for example the couches in teh lobby bar (which is indeed THE place to be in the evenings)are lovered with leather, lashed together like an early american tent of some kind, and there's a buffalo skin tossed over like a throw. I'm not making this up. Clever. Different. So fun.

You haev the option to book the room size you want, and we chose "small' for a lower price point, but though aour room was small it wasn't cramped in the least. Full bed (important to ask what you'll get if that's too snug for you), a tasble/desk, full fridge and snacks and lovely, quite large bathroom. Bed and bedding -- lovely! Windows, sunny and bright. We hung around in our room quite a bit and were very comfortable. Everybody seems to comment on the dark hallways. Yep. They're dark. Lobby is too. Not sure what the big deal is. But keep your eyes open. clever words and touches are everywhere. I won't spoil your fun by telling you the ones we loved. Stumptown coffee, fantastic, thanks ot those who noted it's cash only -- thoguh there's an atm in the lobby, you just have to look for it.

If you love the Marriott kind of experience, this will not be your gig. But if you like the boutique hotel feel, you might just love the Ace. Go! Just go.

The hotel lobby is amazing, and to have "Opening Ceremony" and "Project nr 8" concept stores inside the hotel is like heaven for me. All the events inside and around the hotel are very hip. The coffee shop is also gorgeous!
The interior design is industrial concept and fit very well with all the rest.
The stuff is friendly but not too much.
The noise is was upsetting for me, mostly on the street side of the hotel.
The restaurant worth one of your dinners.
Enjoy!

Hi Claudia,

Thanks so much for your review. We like your picture of our flower cart. We're very sorry that it was noisy. Next time please let us know so we can try to put you in a quieter area. Sometimes the interior rooms get less of the City noise. We hope to have you back soon.

Love,

The Ace staff

"Sure, they have rooms but checking into the Ace isn't about sleeping; it's about living. If there one place, one time - this is it. Sure, the 'suburban' factor is seeping in but still this is on the radar of those in the know and mostly not of those who don't" Dark, cavernous and incredibly entertaining, you can make a day of just people-watching here as stylish 20-somethings gestalt their west coast Stumptown sisters with thrift-store bargains that put shame to anyone who thinks style and attitude can be bought, borrowed or faked. Nope, this is the real deal for celebrating the zeitgeist of post-millennial Manhattan and all that the next twenty years promises to bring. Portland in Manhattan? Sure, in some weird way but interpreted for more of the trans-Atlantic b-class set who imagine the American west coast as something akin to a Davis Lynch movie set. Hey, they can have their fantasies too. WOW!

Originally founded in Seattle, Washington. Ace operates hotels in Seattle, Portland, New York and Palm Springs. Ace has been called “the country’s most original” hotel by the New York Times, and a “mega-chain waiting to happen” by my favorite printed word Wallpaper.

The first Ace Hotel opened in 1999. Friends Alex Calderwood, Wade Weigel, and Doug Herrick purchased and transformed a Seattle halfway house into an affordable hotel that would appeal to the creative class. Calderwood and Weigel had previously founded Rudy's, a barbershop concept they started in Seattle that eventually expanded to more than a dozen West Coast locations, and a marketing and advertising company known as "Neverstop". In 2007, Jack Barron joined the team, and a second hotel was opened in Portland, followed by properties in Palm Springs in 2009 & New York in 2010. According to Calderwood "the style and furnishing of each Ace property is designed to reflect its location, with an eye towards re-imagining properties that are challenged"

First time I travelled to NY for a business trip I did not pick this hotel, I picked another one as it's near the Diamond district, I'll put a review about it also. Going back, this is a very nice hotel, especially if you want to hang out after working. Lots of people in the lobby after office hours. Rooms are nice. Bathroom is ok but a bit small. Amenities are good enough. I like the layout of the room, which also comes with a working turntable. Service is good too and I would say the only thing bad I can say is the tiny bathroom. Walking distance everywhere, oh yeah, you're in NY it's good to walk. BTW, free wifi too.
