The Townhouse Inn of Chelsea

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 7, 2013 via mobile

We recently stayed at the Inn on 23rd. I would highly recommend this inn. Great location in Chelsea. Everyone was extremely nice! It was like spending a weekend with friends. Hotel has a restaurant downstairs for a quick bite. Also provides free breakfast and a honor bar for guests. Prices were very reasonable. Airplane sized cocktails for $3. Great for a nightcap or a drink before heading out for the evening. Rooms were comfortable with really nice antique/ eclectic finishings. Would definitely stay again!!!

If you’re visiting New York City and want a central, welcoming and individual place to stay, the Inn on 23rd your choice. The hotel itself is located in the lively Chelsea district near the corner with 6th Avenue, which makes it a great starting point for adventures downtown, uptown or across to features like the High Line. Numerous subway lines also have stations on 23rd Street so you’re only a few blocks away from nearly anywhere on the rail grid.

Beyond location, the place is made by the people. The Inn isn’t your typical bland city hotel, nor is it a claustrophobic bed and breakfast. It’s an ideal blend of both. Friendly staff greet you each time you go via the 2nd floor office, especially Grace, who deserves particular mention. All go out of their way not just to name places you might enjoy, but then produce information and – in some cases – membership passes to allow you to visit them for free. Immediately you can see how this will save you hassle (and money).

We recommend ordering the wine and cheese package on arrival – for $35 it’s a generous serving that sustains you after a long flight. On Friday and Saturday nights, free wine and cheese are offered in the breakfast room, which is a nice way to meet other guests. An honour system also operates at the bar so that if you need a glass (or bottle) of wine at any hour, you can pay even when the desk is unattended. Breakfasts (included in the tariff) are varied, tasty and can be enjoyed over free magazines and newspapers. A 20% discount on the Inn’s first-floor restaurant, the Guilty Goose, is also a handy saving for a nice venue with a diverse menu.

Each of the rooms has its own style of décor, adding ambience without being overwhelming. We chose room 54 – the highest room on the top floor, back from the street – and it was nice and quiet. Even the cleaners were friendly and they kept the place tidy, without being intrusive.

All in all, this is a perfect way to enjoy New York City, especially if you are staying for more than a couple of nights. I can imagine that it might suit business travellers, but it’s especially good for tourists hoping for a friendly and cost retreat after the hustle of exploring the Big Apple.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms feature skylights, and it might be a good idea to stay at the back away from the...

I had a wonderful stay at The Inn on 23rd. I was in New York for meetings that were mostly taking place in Times Square. My company normally puts me in a hotel in that area. It was truly refreshing to end my day on 23rd Street, in a neighborhood where I could relax and recharge for the next day (and grab a pint at The Guilty Goose!). The room was beautiful and comfortable and the warm breakfast each morning was a great way to start the day.

I will be recommending The Inn on 23rd for anyone visiting New York.

A very nice hotel, off the beaten tracks. We had great fun there: friendly staff, nice and large rooms (for NYC), good breakfast. The restaurant donwstairs serves good food, and good local beers.
We surely recommend this hotel.

A nice B & B in Chelsea area. I am quite hesitant to write a review because I know it will be more difficult to get a reservation now because of what I will write. Reasonable price with the size of the room! It's clean and I slept well EXCEPT for the A/C which is window type. The A/C was blowing on my face and it was too hot to sleep with just the ceiling fan on. Oh well... One minor detail. I know which room NOT to get next time....

They had a nice quaint library with coffee and cold water available. They also have this old (1960) refrigerator so you can keep your leftovers and microwave them for the next day. Awesome!!

The Guilty Goose is the pub downstairs and it was not loud at all. I really like the neighborhood and this place is a gem for those looking for a place to stay and trying to avoid the tourist areas.

Sure there is room for improvement. Maybe, they could change their pillows and mattress. But, the staffs are courteous and the hotel is warm and cozy. That's it! I would go back.

The entrance from the street lets this quirky hotel down . The library honesty bar and the room décor are all great and very individual . There are a few restaurants nearby although the next door place is really a ( noisy ) bar serving some food . There was no one on reception when I left and breakfast did not start until 8.0 . The staff went out of their way to offer advice support etc

stayed over Sat night (7.20.13) to visit daughter. Very polite and friendly staff, great amenities. A wonderful library and snacks as well as bar, fully stocked with $3 drinks, in Chelsea district of NYC, tremendous. Cheese and snacks hit spot, free wine was sure fine. Rooms were second to none, everything exceptional. We will be back, already looking forward to it.

Room Tip: check them out online but really don't think you could go wrong.
