I was a little worried about the size and quality of the rooms after reading the reviews but was utterly charmed by this historic hotel after our 2 night stay.
I can't speak for the small rooms with shared baths. We stayed in a "Captain's" room with private bath on the 2nd floor. And what a room it was!
My 6 year old son loved the soaker tub. We had a large balcony that couldn't be enjoyed due to the cold weather, but it was a nice surprise and added luxury. No view, mostly apartments/condos next door, but that didn't matter..just to be able to open 2 french doors to the outside on a private terrace with outdoor furniture was nice.
You truly felt like you were stepping back in time as soon as you entered the lobby. I won't divulge the charming details, you have to find out for yourself.
Yes, the walls are thin, and the nightclub music could be heard through the floors! so light sleepers should bring good ear plugs.
The best part: Cafe Gitane downstairs serving up the most beautiful french-style breakfasts in a charming setting. And the old-style elevator with the elevator man was my son's favourite part.
This is a place with simple comforts. What makes it special are the extras like free wi-fi, ipod dock/player, complimentary filtered water, and that cool elevator.More
