The Jane hotel is off the beaten path on the west side highway. Its where the alternative cool kids hang out due to its locatation. The hotel has an old charm feel and lots of people, europeans, rave about the hotel. For American standards, do not stay here! Rooms are small and There are BED BUGS at this joint. They bite and hurt like crazy. Management is horrible and look up where you are from and say " xxxxx is also known for its bed bugs...maybe you brought them". They want your money and that is all.
Small rooms, rude staff, dirty communal bathrooms and BED BUGS. Unless you are drunk 24/7, do not stay here.

Thanks for writing. I'm so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy yourself. I don't recall interacting with you personally but I'll do my best to address your concerns now. I'll start by saying that all of our guest rooms include air-conditioners. If a guest should ever have trouble operating their unit we are just a phone-call away at '0'. As for the bites you received, i'm sorry to hear about this. Bed bugs are a wide-spread problem in New York (as well as other areas both in the US and abroad). If you have a look at the map section of the link you posted at bed bug registry you will see that cases of bed bugs dot the entire island of Manhattan in every neighborhood. This city has the most cases of any city. That being said, we would never accuse our guests of bringing them in intentionally. It is possible that bugs would be brought in as this is a transient property and guests are in and out every day, however this is not an accusation only a point of fact. What I can tell you is that should we run into a problem we are fully capable of treating it fully to ensure that our guests do not bring it with them. We have just completed an extensive treatment of the entire building as well and I can tell you with confidence that you are less likely to find them here than other locations in New York. Our entire staff is trained to look for signs and to treat should the smallest hint of a bug come about. Once again, we apologize that you did not enjoy yourself. Happy travels.

Staying at the Jane is a great way to stay in NY and get a taste of living in the city. I stayed in a one bunk room on the 3rd floor. So there's your first taste of real ny living, tiny living quarters. The room was clean. I did not like the fabric panels surrounding the bed, seemed like it had to be dirty, how would you clean those? Elevators were very busy during the day, easier to take the stairs. Staff was great but be prepared to carry your luggage up the front steps.
Another great feature for me was the neighborhood which was quiet, other than the nightclub in the hotel! Not that far from the subway, great shops within walking distance. The river walk across the street is a nice quiet place to people watch. You can use a hotel bike to ride the bike path too.
Now lets talk about the shared bathrooms. I've never stayed anywhere with this feature, saw a few guys exiting the showers without much on and practically running in the other direction when I came out of the bathroom the toilets and showers were totally private but once you open that door, you don't know what you'll see. Haha. I never felt the least bit unsafe.
I would stay here again if I visit the city solo.

Thanks for writing. We're glad you enjoyed your stay. For guests who are not so comfortable with the shared bathroom experience we do offer Captain's Cabins which provide one full, queen or king-size bed and a private bathroom. We hope to see you again soon! Let us know if we can assist you with anything else in the meantime.

This place is so special for me because of a long love story.
Anyway, I was in two different rooms, I was in one of the smallest ones, the "Standard Cabin"... and this is it... it's like a ship cabin, very very small but nice. I just spent one night in there. It's a great choice for solo travelers or something like "chic" backpackers.
In my second time in the hotel, I was in the "Captain's Cabin"... so here we are talking about hotel room, the two other "cabins" are more like a mix between a hostel and a hotel.
The Captain's Cabin is outstanding, great furniture, great bed, and outstanding shower.
Cafe Gitane is a great spot too. Great for lunch.

Room Tip: If you're looking for a HOTEL room, choose the Captain's Cabin. If you're looking for a...

I thought the people who stayed at the Jane were great, i thought Gilbert and other staff mmembers were great, i thought the location was superb, i thought the room was a great
bargain but i did not like trying to use the public bathrooms to find people who look like
they are homeless doing their toilette or using the bathroom downstairs to take care
of all matters personal....the manager yelled at me for my critique of the limited income
people whom he says he defends or the boiler that broke. He said he could nto be responsible
for machinery but i thought his attitude was poor, at best. They are undergoing constant renovations even though they say they are finished. Great facility if you can put up with
these things and more. IT is NOT subway close.

Room Tip: They have a great restaurant adjacent and there is a club which is very choosy . I dont mind snobbis...

Thanks for writing. I'm glad you enjoyed getting to know Gilbert, we'll send him your best. We do employ a staff which services the common areas around the clock to prevent anyone who does not belong in the restrooms from being in the restrooms. I apologize for the boiler malfunction. While these things do happen, we certainly apologize that this inconvenienced you.

We hope to see you again soon. Thanks for writing!

Stayed two nights at Jane Hotel (July 2-4), other than good location, everything else was horrible. Carpet in the room is dirty, room is stuffy, so is the corridor, very noisy from corridor and other rooms. Don’t stay at Jane in hot days—no air-cond, and the fan is loud, and air is not circulating at all. Courtesy of staff is minus-10 on a 1-10 scale. Heavy equipment brought in to do major work in 3 rooms opposite my room from 5pm-2:30am!!! This is unacceptable!!! I complained and the staff said will stop at 11:30pm (even then is unacceptable), and did not happen, so I have to yell at workers at 2:30am then they stopped. No courtesy of the staff or the hotel to forewarn me or move me to other room. Staff is rude. I will never stay in the Jane Hotel again. Minus 5 stars, if I could.

Room Tip: go elsewhere, anywhere would be better

I'm so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. We pride ourselves on having the warmest and most friendly staff in the world, so I'm sorry if this was not your experience. We are happy to take requests from guests to accommodate them in areas of the hotel which get less traffic if at all possible. This generally allows for minimal disruptions. Of course, our Standard and Bunk Cabins are quite small and close together, so I would suggest a Captain's Cabin for light sleepers. These rooms are generally tucked away and offer more distance from other guests. We hope you'll consider coming back to see us in the future. Thanks for the note.

It may be unfair to write a true review as I ended up not staying here. I did have a reservation, I did show up and check in, I did go up to my room. At that point I pretty much headed back to the desk and checked out. First, the place smelled moldy, and the communal bathrooms (which are very communal) smelled like they hadn't been cleaned in days. The room was so small that next to the bed there was not actually room for both me and my suitcase to fit in the room with any space left for movement. The lighting system is bizarre, the wi-fi was non-existent. Five minutes was enough to have me leave. The only saving grace was the friendliness and understanding of the desk clerk, who checked me out without charge, though with the comment, "this happens all the time, don't worry about it." It's also not located in a spot convenient to much of anything.

Thanks for writing. We understand that our smaller cabins are not for everyone. I would suggest giving our Captain's Cabin a shot next time. These rooms are closer to a traditional hotel room at about 250 square feet. We do employ porters who clean the common areas 24 hours a day, so I'm sorry if you did not feel this was the case. Our staff is happy to address these issues promptly when informed. Our wifi is available throughout the building and we rarely get connectivity complaints, but are happy to address them when informed. Thanks again for writing. Have a lovely summer.
