“The room is about the size of a walk-in closet”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2014 via mobile

I arrived and upon entering the room, was totally surprised to learn that the room is barely larger than a closet. No desk, no chair and no room to open my suitcase. The bathroom did not even have a counter to lay out my little travel case that I carry my toothbrush and shaver in.

Hi,

Thank you for staying with us, we are sorry to learn you did not enjoy your visit. Being a compact boutique hotel, we do offer guests to utilize our public space due to the limited space in our rooms. We do hope that you will join us again in the future as we have completed the renovation in our lobby.

It's a little hard to recommend this hotel in the sense that all I really got was a room the size of a closet to sleep in. But it was a pretty nice closet, and hotel rooms in New York are notoriously small. The room was pretty well furnished -- well, as "well furnished" as a closet could be. The desk was small, and there was only one small desk chair to sit on. There was one small night stand and a tiny bureau (that did contain a safe). The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom decent. Unless you like sitting in closets, though, you're probably not going to spend much awake-time in your room. If there were any other facilities in the hotel, I didn't see them (the basement, which I believe normally houses a fitness room, was under renovation). There is no really lobby to speak of (well, there's a reception desk to check in, but no chairs or anything).

The best thing about the hotel is the neighborhood. It's nice, and feels "real," in the sense that most of the people around live there and there are shops that cater to them -- not just to tourists. It's the kind of place you could imagine living in, if you could imagine living in Manhattan. But I'd probably want some more space before I moved in!

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! At the moment we are finishing up the renovations to our fitness center and lobby, which will now feature a very stylish lobby bar which will enhance not only the hotel but be another neighborhood attraction that you mentioned you enjoyed. We have also added a seating area in the lobby while the final touches are being completed. We hope to see you again soon!

Great location and very good value for NYC. Staff helpful. No gym when we stayed as under refurb but could use a fitness centre very near by. Excellent restaurant next door - great Sunday brunch. Would go back.

Room Tip: If you are a single traveller go for a double bed rather than queen cos the room will feel be a bit...

The bed was a king and I could touch the wall from it! Really comfy and the bathroom was fine. Very clean and tidy. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. There was an old style diner, the Starlight Cafe (real good), was only 2 blocks away. Plenty of reasonable priced resturants with in walking distance and the subway was handy. Great place to stay.

This hotel is located in Chelsea, Midtown Manhattan, and is in walking distance to many attractions like The Empire State Building and more.
If walking's not your thing there are several subway lines just around the corner which will take you anywhere in Manhattan.
Although the rooms are very small, they are modern and come with a safe, coffee machine, complimentary water, robes, free WiFi and Cable TV (no breakfast though). The bathroom is very modern and up to date as well.
The housekeeping is impeccable! After check in they came up and asked if we needed more water or anything else and were really nice and accompanied us in other requests we had. We'll be leaving a tip for sure!
The front desk was just as helpful and service minded. I needed some documents printed, help regarding transport and more, and they always helped with a smile. I've felt really welcome here and not because it's a fancy place. It's worth searching for special deals and booking online though, as the price is maybe a bit steep.
The double beds are small and short (120 cm wide would be my guess, and probably not 200 cm long) so if you're big and/or tall you want to make sure you request a room with Queen size bed or bigger.
Our room, 311, facing the road (and with a view of The Empire State Building...yeah!), was a bit noisy so I used earplugs. My partner slept like a baby:-)!
All in all a very quaint hotel with great staff!

First of all I had business in Chelsea for the week and this Hotel was centrally located and served that purpose very well. However, the room was very small, even by New York standards. It had something that could be referred to as a desk but it was so small it barely fit my lap top. The room had a comfortable enough bed but the room is configured so that you are sleeping right next to the hallway wall and it is not quiet. Every time a door down the hall closed it was certainly very noticeable. If you do not have to spend anytime in the room during your stay it will serve ok but if you are in and out of your room like most business travelers then I do not recommend.
The staff was nice and there are lots of good places to eat nearby and they are supposedly rebuilding a lobby (construction noise during my stay) as they dont have one right now.

I'll be back to the GEM Chelsea.

It is very clean, warm (I was there in winter) and, unlike most motels/hotels, had plenty of light at night time and in the bathroom.

The rooms are kept well - immaculate really.

For convenience, the hotel is near the subway, close to a laundromat, a good bagel shop (Murray's), and is on top of a particularly hipster convenience store and restaurant. There's also a variety of restaurants of varying cuisine and price close by and a pretty sizeable regular convenience store.

The best thing, however, was that it was clean and quiet.
