“Nice hotel option in Chelsea”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

The Gem is a very nice small hotel option on a tree lined side street in the heart of Chelsea. The rooms are small and basic but very clean and quite functional. We are never in our room for long when visiting NY so the room size didn't matter. There are abundant eating options within a short walk and the subway is convenient also. Will definitely stay here again.

The friendly concierge and receptionist at the GEM hotel made our stay at the hotel very pleasant.

We got a room on the fifth floor. The room itself had all the amenities we were looking for and we did not mind that it was small. The bathroom was clean and spacious. Taking a shower there was relaxing thanks to the soft stream of water from the modern shower head.
The bed was comfortable but it got quite loud at 1pm; despite closed windows. People (guests in the penthouse?) partied on the roof top across from our room. It was not a super big deal because we were tired enough from exploring the city and we went right back to sleep. However, we will request a different room when we come back to this hotel. We are planning on staying there again because it is a very good deal for a room in this part of Manhattan. We loved the location and the design and functionality of the room.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that is not too close to the roof top party place. It can get loud during the nigh...

The hotel is very stylish but, based on the room size, should be described as 'bijou' not 'boutique'. The space in the room (10' X 11') and the storage within the rooms is poor as noted by others. We were attending a wedding and even a normal length dress could not be hung in the wardrobe. The safe should be removed to accommodate male suits but even then the wardrobe would not have had the length to hang a dress. My wife hung her dresses in the shower!!! The room we had overlooked 8th Avenue and was very noisy - the double glazing did not work properly. The air conditioning was extremely noisy - the noisiest we have ever experienced in a lifetime of travel. My wife described it as like a jet engine. At least it drowned out the traffic noise. What made the stay almost a pleasure was the location - Chelsea is a great place - and the unfailing good humor of the delightful Elizabeth. She welcomed us when we arrived soaking wet at check in with a big smile and that smile and friendliness was there every time we saw her over the four nights of our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the inside and don't bring any luggage with you.

Greetings JHLP, thank you for sharing your review with us and for giving us the privilege to serve you. We are glad that you liked the design our hotel and regret to hear that the size of your guest room was not to your satisfaction. We will take your comments and feedback with great importance because it is our devotion to make your stay as memorable and relaxing. I understand the layout of your guest room was unpleasant and if you can give us another opportunity to be of service, I would like to recommend reserving our large business class rooms that provide more space and comfort. If it would be fine with you to e-mail me your name and room number to chelsea.fom@thegemhotel.com, I would like to have our maintenance engineer inspect the AC unit and repair any deficiencies. We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed our location and felt the warm of our personalized service. Elizabeth is truly a passionate staff member of our team and your kind compliments will motivate her very much. I am grateful that you remembered her and it is because of our staff members that we can deliver the finest hospitality. We would be honored to welcome you back and create an experience that you deserve. I remain at your service and it would be my great pleasure to personally oversee your next return.

I spent a week during the NYIAS at this hotel. While it was tasteful decorated the room is EXTREMELY small. It really is a platform bed with a small area to walk around. The closet is useless because of the safe that takes up half of the room, and with that said there is not a full size ironing board. Requests to fix my bathroom ceiling fan were completely ignored and the result is if the door to the bathroom is not closed you end up setting off the fire alarm within the room and the rest of the hotel. The front desk then calls you up and accuses you of smoking in the room (that is a big no no) Strange people knock on your door in the middle of the night because their boyfriend forgot to give them a key and they thought they were locked out. Finally when you lose a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses in the room the housekeeping staff does not turn them in. I guess housekeeping means what I find in the house I keep. Anyway I hope I never have to go back to this hotel.

Dear Paul C, thank you so much for sharing your honest experience with us and allowing us the privilege to serve you. On the behalf of our team and myself, we are deeply sorry that you had to experience an inconvenience at our hotel. Your comments and concerns enrich our spirits to service our guests at a higher level. I understand how you feel and agree consistency should be carried out in the same manner. We greatly care about your loyalty to us and I understand that we did not exceed your expectations during your stay. I will work with my housekeeping and maintenance managers to ensure that such discontents will not occur in the future. We typical receive very positive feedback about our front office team members who are dedicated to make sure your stay is truly special. Please, let me assure you that our staff never meant to upset or accuse you of something that you did not do. It is our upmost priority to be truthful and sincere to each and every guest. If we had found your sunglasses we would have immediately notified you. All of our devoted associates always return whatever they find and we then log the items in our lost and found department which the items are then kept for ninety days. If you would like to speak to me directly about your sunglasses, I would be more than glad to check again if we have located them. We would be honored if you choose to with us again so we can make unique and wonderful memories. I would be grateful if you allow me to oversee your future reservations because I want to make sure that you are completely satisfied.

It's not a luxury hotel, small room, bed works for people 5'11 and under. That said they do the max they can with the space so you have pretty much everything you need (they also have a gym downstairs), extremely clean, people are nice, location is fantastic. All in I'd stay there again.

Small hotel. Friendly staff. Great location. Close to Chelsea, Meat Packing District and many small restaurants. I stayed here on business which was less than 1/2 mile away. Very clean, comfortable small but all NYC hotels are small. Nice bathroom.

Great location, convenient to restaurants and bars. Rooms on the smallish side, but adequate. Fee WIFI is great. Nice bathrooms but zero counter/storage space.....an open cabinet under the sink would be very helpful. The safe is a nice touch but it needs to be moved out of the wardrobe. Being at the bottom of the wardrobe, the safe prevents clothes from hanging straight down. They have to be "curved" to accommodate the length.

Room Tip: Some rooms are about 3 feet shorter than others. The "shorter" rooms result in being able...
