On the way to Grand Central and just after Bryant Park make the time to visit this incredible artchitectural jewel. The entrance itself is grand and the inside foyer is truly reflective of a much grander and opulent time. We just do not do buildings like this anymore! The reading rooms with oak carvings and bookstacks make me wish I had more time. The library is full of atmosphere and truly will not disappoint!

Strolling through the New York Public Library (Mid-Manhattan Branch) takes about half an hour, and I'd highly recommend a visit! The building itself is two blocks long, sitting right on 41st street and 5th avenue. My daughter and I walked through the hushed interior, marveling at the grand architecture and taking a few (non-flash) photos, especially from above the main entrance hall. Combine a visit to the New York Public Library with a walk through Bryant Park and Grand Central Terminal (a few steps away), and you've spent a wonderful (free) afternoon in New York City.

Went here while in NYC in December, this is the most amazing library I have ever seen. The architecture is second to none in and outside of this great building. After seeing it in so many films it was surreal to be there in person, make time to visit here if in NYC

I liked the quiet atmosphere, away from the city's hustle. They have a very inteesting book store. Publications that I have not seen elsewhere.

The main library has several entrances,so you may get a little lost if you don't use the main one. There you will find the gift shop which has some excellent artistic replicas and it helps fund the library too.
The exhibition hall is adjacent and is free and has some wonderful exhibitions on, well researched and curated. I saw the 'lunchtime ' one with replicas of the history of lunch in NY, menus, counters, ads etc.
Also as an academic, excellent research facilities - rooms vary in opening times so check.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and there are talks held regularly which are free too.

Thank RSC
