I was really looking forward to going here and was very disappointed. Half the museum was closed for renovation. Very small museum with not many exhibits. I expected more of the history of NYC and expected for of an overview - a museum about NYC.

One exhibit was about Hurricane Sandy which was interesting - other exhibits weren't - don't waste your time. Thought the NY Historical Society Museum was more interesting. Thought it was a waste and I think if they have half their exhibit halls closed they should charge a discount

I saw a temporary exhibit here on the Gilded Age in NYC and really liked it. I did not see the permanent collection so can't speak to that. However, it is an interesting building and the museum in on the Museum Mile, so it is easy to combine with visits to other museums in the area, so I would recommend it.

A lot of the space is under renovation...so your experience might be different when it is at full capacity...

The "Gilded Age" show was very small and while there were very pretty curios you did not get a broader sense of what life was like in that time for those people.

Hurricane Sandy show interesting and well thought-out--did a good job showing the sequence of events that led to the storm and its devastating effects.

The exhibit spaces are small, so you can see everything here in a manageable dose. Pluses include nice employees, cool shop, clean and large restrooms, fee wi-fi and a tiny cafe to restore your batteries.

This is a smallish museum, but it has a good overview movie of NY history that provides nice context for exploring the rest of the city. The special exhibits on activism in the city and Bel Geddes were especially interesting. The building and location on central park are appealing. This museum is part of the North American Reciprocal Museum network, so you might get in free if you already belong to another museum.

The Museum of the City of New York is not a general museum of the history of New York. The permanent exhibit displays the history of grassroots social movements in New York - commendably, both on the left & the right - & this is quite interesting. There are always various temporary exhibits, which can be of interest (or not). There is also a pleasant collection of maritime paintings. The museum is at the northern end of the Upper East Side on 5th Avenue, across from Central Park, & close to Harlem.
