“Such a gem of a museum -- and a delicious cafe”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

Visited May 2013 after hearing about the video, Timescapes, providing an historical overview of NYC. My teenaged daughter and I were very impressed with the video and current exhibitions (Stephen Burrows design and the model apartment designed to meet emerging housing needs. The building is adjacent to Central Park north so after a delicious lunch in the museum's cafe we had a really nice walk through the Conservatory Garden.

“A Sweet Museum with something for all ages”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

Near the north end of Central Park across from the marvelous Conservatory Gardens ( you are almost sure to see a wedding party there for pictures) this small but informative museum has something for everyone. From the famous Dollhouse to the latest exhibit with a micro unit apartment model soon to be a reality in NYC the whole family will have a memorable experience.

“helps understanding NYC vibe and history”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

Its a small museum compared to others that you can visit in NYC, but I loved to visit it. Is tells you the story of NYC in an excellent 25-minutes movie and I also loved the exhibition about the activism in new york too! I think it shows an important view to those visiting NYC and sure helps understand the city's vibe a bit more. I would come back and recommend this museum to other!

“Dynamic new exhibition on Stephen Burrows”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

A visit to the Museum of the City of NY is a step forward and a step back - you can check out the future of micro-housing by stepping into a 3D model, and now the '70s fashion designs of African American designer Stephen Burrows.

“A waste of time and money”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

I and my companion found this museum extremely disappointing and misleadingly named.

On the day of our visit the displays comprised:

(1) A generic exhibition about modular city living spaces, of marginal relevance to New York.
(2) Some paintings of boats, of marginal relevance to New York.
(3) An exhibition about US activism (e.g. slavery, gay rights) of marginal relevance to New York.
(4) A 30 minute film, admittedly about New York, but which you could have watched at home on your computer.
(5) Some paintings of winter scenes, of marginal relevance to New York.

It's hard to understand how a museum of this name, in one of the world's greatest cities, can be so very poor. Just off the top of my head, what about some basics like: a large relief map showing the geography and key features of the area; a walk-through timeline exhibition showing people and their lives in New York from each decade; some displays about the construction of iconic buildings like the Brooklyn Bridge and Empire State Building; information about immigration to New York and its cultural diversity; a focus on some of the specific neighbourhoods of Manhattan; something about Broadway and the theatre tradition... It isn't rocket science!

If their mission isn't to provide a basic introduction to the geography, history, demographic, culture and architecture of the city, then they should really call themselves something else.
