“Dynamic new exhibition on Stephen Burrows”

A visit to the Museum of the City of NY is a step forward and a step back - you can check out the future of micro-housing by stepping into a 3D model, and now the '70s fashion designs of African American designer Stephen Burrows.

“A waste of time and money”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

I and my companion found this museum extremely disappointing and misleadingly named.

On the day of our visit the displays comprised:

(1) A generic exhibition about modular city living spaces, of marginal relevance to New York.
(2) Some paintings of boats, of marginal relevance to New York.
(3) An exhibition about US activism (e.g. slavery, gay rights) of marginal relevance to New York.
(4) A 30 minute film, admittedly about New York, but which you could have watched at home on your computer.
(5) Some paintings of winter scenes, of marginal relevance to New York.

It's hard to understand how a museum of this name, in one of the world's greatest cities, can be so very poor. Just off the top of my head, what about some basics like: a large relief map showing the geography and key features of the area; a walk-through timeline exhibition showing people and their lives in New York from each decade; some displays about the construction of iconic buildings like the Brooklyn Bridge and Empire State Building; information about immigration to New York and its cultural diversity; a focus on some of the specific neighbourhoods of Manhattan; something about Broadway and the theatre tradition... It isn't rocket science!

If their mission isn't to provide a basic introduction to the geography, history, demographic, culture and architecture of the city, then they should really call themselves something else.

“Something to do”

I wouldn't advice anyone to go out of their way to come here but it had a few nice bits and bobs to see... there are better museums so do some research before you make a decision!

The Timescapes movie is simply beautiful, and I loved the exhibitions on Activism in NYC and on micro-housing. Definitely worth the visit!

“A quick visit on Museum Mile”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

Make the visit to The Museum of the City of New York to see the excellent film entitled Timescapes. It is the most comprehensive and shortest film on New York City's history that I've seen. The little cafe on the second floor (I think) has a good selection but I would not recommend having a cappucino. The bus is close by and you can hop on it to visit any of a whole group of museums along Fifth Avenue from about 81st Street to 103rd. This is a good way to enjoy your day if it rains. I understand that there is a festival on Museum Mile in June but we visited in April.
